Virtual Pew News # 8 A Christmas Gift for You

This issue of The Virtual Pew News will be much shorter than usual. It will be shorter because I value your time during this busy time of year. I could say much about the happenings at The Virtual Pew, but will leave that for the future. I will say, the ministry and the effectiveness continue. The ministry continues as does the needs of this ministry. I continue to hear from individuals ranging from the non religious to pastors as to the impact this ministry is having. I know because of first hand experience with those receiving ministry. I also know our needs continue on in a greater way than ever before.

This issue is about giving back, giving back in such a way that shows to some extent the ministry of The Virtual Pew. This issue will also give back by providing you links that will help you reach out to your friends, family, coworkers and others with the message of Jesus Christ. This issue is unique, yet it has also proven to be effective in the work we are doing.

Since the first of December, I have been doing daily blogs that provides a brief, nonconfrontive devotional along with numerous videos. These are on various themes and all of the videos have a Christmas season focus. From Walt Disney to the Trans Siberian Orchestra, videos from YouTube have been used in these postings that have as of now been seen by hundreds of thousands on both MySpace and The Virtual Pew Blog sites.

There has also been the ongoing interaction with numerous individuals including interactions such as, a family with serious issues where divorce, and suicide prevention has been needed, troops in Iraq, and individuals struggling with alcoholism, and Christians facing issues of isolation from churches. We are still dealing with the real life, difficult situations that many face.

Prior to going on to the postings just an update to let you know that I am also providing the link to the previous newsletter which gave some giving updates for The Virtual Pew. Those giving needs are still present and while some has given to help provide gifts for others, we still have many others to provide assistance to. This weekend I am going to be distributing some clothes to the homeless in the Wichita area, and we have had money designated for the wrestling ministry we are involved in. Finances also took a hit as two paying jobs canceled this month, one wrestling related and another speaking related. Those things make it difficult, but we continue on.

One addition will be the addition of advertisements on the pages. We continue to seek ways to bring in additional funds so are trying the google addsense pages.

I ask you to read through this entire newsletter. This particular newsletter will follow a little different format than usual and we will be back to the regular newsletter in the next week, of course the giving information will be included in those newsletters. I also ask you to prayerfully consider the value of The Virtual Pew this month as you read about the ministry support we are seeking. I ask you to then; if you have questions email or call me. The Cell Number of The Virtual Pew is (316) 258-3952. After answering those questions, I want you to then ask yourself; in what ways can I support and help this ministry?

I am also including for those receiving this information via email two attachments. One of a brochure describing The Virtual Pew that can be used to give to individuals you know who are either not in church, or are looking for spiritual answers. Many who have been hurt by the church and/or Christians have received unique value in The Virtual Pew and we have been able to refer many to local churches after some work. The other brochure is one you can give to individuals in your church, or even your church that describes the ministries at The Virtual Pew they can support via, volunteerism, prayer, and financially. This also includes some basic information on how to book me into your congregation and the variety of topics I can present on that is relevant to the ministry of The Virtual Pew. As we approach the Christmas Season I find myself troubled more than usual. I am reminded of my own childhood and the Christmases I observed. Truth is Christmas while growing up was not a memorable or enjoyable event. Gifts and happy memories were few and far between. Oh, there were on rare occasion’s happy memories and enjoyable gifts, but not often. I think it is for that reason that as I have become an adult Christmas has been so enjoyable due to the love of giving I have. I knew my family would enjoy Christmas and it has always been more about giving than receiving. I can honestly say my wife, children, and others I have come to know over the years have enjoyed this wonderful season in ways that have given me pleasure as a result of my ability to give.

As an adult I have had a few rough seasons but God has always come through. This season has been tough. The closest thing I can recall is my first year after leaving Crossroads Clubhouse in Tulsa and going into the ministry full-time. I had put money back to live on for about a year and a half, that is before 9/11/01 hit and I lost over one half of my investments in the crash that came to the stock and bond market. I didn’t know how I was going to celebrate Christmas that year. I was driving a school bus and working full-time as a volunteer at Westport Mennonite Brethren Church. I was barely able to pay the bills.

That Christmas the church decided to give a gift of love to the pastors. Since I was a volunteer pastor I didn’t expect to receive anything, in fact the church had not planned on any gift until some within the congregation reminded them of their desire to give to my family. It was during the presentation of gifts to the pastors that the church honored me, even mentioning they had forgotten about giving me a gift that season. They took up an offering, and there were several individuals who came up after the service to give gifts. The monetary gifts those people gave where what enabled me to give my family Christmas that year. I’ll never forget how God and his people came through. This year the season and reminders are much the same. As this newsletter goes out, presently, there is no way I will be able to share gifts of love with either my family.

This year and this season has brought back memories. Truth is the last months have been tough. I have gone through a series of health issues that seems to be on the mend and finally being addressed. I just completed surgery that has hopefully resolved some of the issues. I know I can expect one more surgery and a recovery that will take some time. That on top of a recent move into a much smaller house and the lack of giving at The Virtual Pew has caused me to be a little depressed lately and at times questioning the call God has on my life. There has been sacrifice many don’t realize.

I have no doubt God has been using the ministry of The Virtual Pew, I see it in the correspondence, I hear it in the conversations either face to face or via telephone. I have no doubt God is using the ministry of The Virtual Pew. The truth of it is though, without the support of others who can give, or the speaking engagements this ministry is going to have a very difficult time continuing in the way it is. As a result, this Christmas, without a gift from God, and the gifts of others it will be difficult. Presently, The Virtual Pew has less than $600 in its account after outstanding bills are paid. I am dedicated to the ministry of The Virtual Pew; I know its value, I know of the changed lives and appropriate leadership and direction it is giving to various people across the planet. From Australia, to the sands of Baghdad, and from the streets of Wichita Kansas, to the shores of Hawaii, I have had the joy of experiencing and knowing this ministries effectiveness.

This Christmas I am asking, you to consider how you can give and support the ministry of The Virtual Pew. I know many have been praying for us, I appreciate that more than you will ever know. But I also ask you to consider the words of James in considering that; “Faith without works is dead.” In other words, there comes a point in time you consider ways to support this ministry in both time and finances.

The hope is that this year The Virtual Pew is ready to move to the next level, including the possibility of bringing on additional staff, with the appropriate gifts. If the money comes in, I would love to bring on a one-half- time and a full-time position to The Virtual Pew. Remember my salary is set at $300 a week. I and those involved in The Virtual Pew would love to raise that salary but as of the last few months that salary has only been $200 a week in order to spread the finances into areas that need attention and to keep those areas of ministry going. I ask you to consider this small salary, understand I have requested and kept the salary at a minimum two thirds of what the regular salary is in order to keep things going.

I also ask churches, businesses and others to consider bringing me in to speak, even if just for a few moments to describe the work of The Virtual Pew. You simply have to visit the web site to see the topics available. Many have said wonderful things regarding this work and the effectiveness of what God has done. I will tell you, as I watch the media and press; the message of hope is as relevant as ever.


It is discouraging, even depressing at times, but I continue to be reminded of the need for people to hear a real, and honest message relating to Jesus Christ. I find pleasure in spending time with people and finding ways to encourage them. It is one of the things that makes this ministry unique, I see people I am working with as people of value, I see the need to give them real time. I don’t want handouts, I want to earn the way for The Virtual Pew, but I need doors to get into, I need someone who will follow through with the ability to book me. We need more than prayer, we need prayer backed up with action.

As you approach the Christmas and Holiday Season I ask you to look at ways you can financially support this ministry. Truth is, we have had Christians, non Christians, even Atheists and Agnostics give because of the value they see in it and the knowledge they have regarding the work I do. I promise the desire, effort, and effectiveness won’t cease.

This year, for the first Christmas of The Virtual Pew we are asking people to consider the gifts they can give. For each gift, either in honor of, on behalf of, or for another, even yourself, we will send a personalized card of your choice designating the gift given. If you want the gift to be anonymous we will insure it is. We will also send appropriate cards for the person giving the gift to the person receiving the gift. Because Jewish contributors have given we will also send Hanukah Cards, or for others, Holiday Cards. You simply designate the holiday you want to observe. Of course, we celebrate, unapologetically, Christmas, that isn’t to say we don’t appreciate and observe others and their day of choice.

The personalized cards we send out will have a paragraph that designates what the gift is for, and who it is from, it will also include a paragraph describing The Virtual Pew. This is a unique way to give a gift that makes a difference. I’ll never forget my daughter doing something like this last year when she brought us two goats that assisted a poor family in a third world country. We will likely never see the family those goats went to, but I have thought often throughout the year of how those goats must have helped the family. Your gift will make a difference in the life of someone.

Counseling: I provide daily counseling on various subjects. As you can imagine this takes time and involves a variety of individuals in various needs. In the past the counseling I have provided involves everything from dealing with pornography, the hurt that has come about from Christians, struggling with past sexual sin, drug abuse, sexual abuse, parental relationships, mental illness, and much more.

$25 provides an hour of counseling service

$30 provides 300 minutes of telephone service. Currently The Virtual Pew uses 600 -900 minutes of phone service a month which involves counseling via telephone.

Specialized Counseling: This is an area that involves more than just talking or corresponding with someone via the telephone, and/or, email. Over the last year this has included Drug Counseling, Sexual Abuse Counseling, Mental Illness, Job Training Counseling, marriage counseling, and various others.

$25 purchases a drug test kit for someone involved in drug counseling and rehab.

$25 provides an hour counseling services for anyone in any area.

$50 provides materials for a prospective family in marriage counseling.

$30 provides an hour of job search assistance for someone unemployed.

$1,000 assists in the cost of counseling, job search, job placement, and job training for an unemployed person. I have unique experience and will work with the homeless, mentally ill, or unemployed person to identify appropriate persons who will have a chance at success, but also assist in finding job placement, and up to one week with the person on the job, training them at no cost to the employer. On these jobs, we search for entry level positions, not fast food or high turnover jobs. Think of the tremendous savings to tax payers, and the help it provides someone unemployed. We aren’t only providing a valuable service here, but a tremendous savings to tax payers.

$1,500 provides an extensive drug treatment program, and detoxification effort to someone coming out of drug addictions. This may require a 30 day assistance program and even involve the person living with us for the duration of time in order to assist them. We cannot guarantee success, we can guarantee effective methods and help that has proven to be effective.

Unique Ministry

$40 gets you an article blogged on The Virtual Pew, and MySpace on any topic you choose. These articles are read by the hundreds of thousands on a weekly basis. Have an area you would like to know my opinion, or see addressed, I’ll spend 2 hours doing the research, and then writing it and posting it complete with hyperlinks and photos.

$40 gets you a movie review and a look at the spiritual themes on virtually any movie you want. Of course for obscure movies or movies not readily available, you may have to provide the movie. If a current movie in theaters, or available on DVD the $40 will include the costs.

$50 takes a homeless person to dinner, not at McDonalds but a nice 3+ star restaurant, something they may not be used to. A note here, blessings such as this are often needed. If a person don’t begin to feel they deserve this type of recognition, they may never feel they are ready to help themselves.

$25 takes a needy child to the movies complete with refreshments.

$100 takes a family of up to 5 to a movie, complete with refreshments and/or a meal at a local restaurant.

$25 provides basic clothing for a homeless person.

$20 purchases a Bible delivered to a person in need.

$100 provides a Christmas celebration to a homeless or needy person. There are only 4 of these available, and each of those persons will spend Christmas with our family on Christmas Eve, and Christmas day. This includes all of the costs for this, including gifts for each person. We know this type of activity opens up relationships with the individuals not just for Christmas but a lifetime.

Wrestling Ministry: For those that don’t know the wrestling community is a large part of the ministry of The Virtual Pew. From providing spiritual counseling and support to wrestling families, to providing assistance for low income families and wrestlers, we have been providing assistance for some time. In fact this ministry came to be known by many by the work I did with young cancer victim Tyler Graebner of Hutchinson Kansas. National sports celebrities all across the world became involved in our efforts with Tyler, the work and Tyler’s story was even featured on ESPN. We have also presented Church on the Mat Services at various locations including National and State Tournaments to as many as 15,000 people. The article Wrestling with God has been used and translated to various languages and has been published all around the world. The ministry doesn’t stop with these things though, there are various other ways you can support the ministry to the wrestling community.

$50 assists a youth wrestler with various club fees.

$20 covers the cost of a wrestling tournament for a low income wrestler.

$25 pays for membership to wrestling groups such as USA Wrestling.

$40 pays the fees for a Kansas Wrestler to be a part of The Kansas Wizzers, a state High School and Jr. High Team that has received national recognition.

$60 provides a wrestling uniform, shoes and a headgear for a low income wrestler.

$150 provides a week long, intensity camp opportunity for a wrestler.

$150 provides the costs of doing one church on the mat church service.

The Virtual Pew Ministry Support

$300 provides one week worth of salary (52 available)

$20,000 provides salary for 1 year, and partial benefits for me. (only one of these available, individuals can contribute to part of this goal)

$20,000 provides a full-time co-worker for The Virtual Pew with benefits. (only one of these available, individuals can contribute to part of this goal)

$12,500 provides a part-time co-worker for The Virtual Pew. (only one of these available, individuals can contribute to part of this goal)

$30 provides 300 minutes of telephone service. Currently The Virtual Pew uses 600 -900 minutes of phone service a month

$400 pays for 1 year maintenance and updates for The Virtual Pew and Mike Furches web sites.

$25 allows for one movie review. Many became aware of The Virtual Pew through the association with Hollywood Jesus. Being able teach others how to use culture to share your faith, is exhibited no place better than with movie reviews.

$15 purchases any one of the 3 movie review books I have contributed to with Hollywood Jesus. These are now selling on eBay and other locations, but we receive no benefits from those sales.

$15 purchases the CD Comin’ Around Again by Mary Jane Furches. The video of Amazing Grace has received praise and acclaim from individuals and groups around the world.

$300 provides the opportunity for me to share with a church on one of a variety of topics at no charge to that church. This is especially important for smaller churches that don’t have a budget to bring in outside speakers.

$25 pays for 1 month of internet service. (only 12 of these available)

$750 allows for one-week of intensive ministry in the streets and among the unchurched in any local community within the Continental United States. This includes transportation to and from the location, lodging while there, meals and extensive ministry in locations such as the streets of Hollywood California or New Orleans Louisiana. The contributor in this area can designate the location where they would like to see this ministry that involves one on one contact with those in the streets, including opportunities, either public and/or private where I will share. Note on this, I and others will work to promote an evangelical presentation while in this area.

$1,250 allows for one-week of extensive ministry to any location in North America including Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii or any of the Caribbean Islands surrounding North America. The contributor in this area can designate the location where they would like to see extensive ministry, involving one on one contact with those in the streets, including opportunities, either public and/or private where I can share. Note on this, I and others will work to promote an evangelical presentation while in this area.

As you can see, there are many needs of The Virtual Pew, and many ways you can support and be a part of this ministry, not just in prayer, but in the area of volunteering, and, via your contributions. I have heard you can tell where a person’s heart is by their calendar or appointment book and their checkbook. I believe that to be true. Where are you willing to invest your time, and your money? I know many ministries, and organizations are hitting you up this season for contributions. Many of those are ministries and/or organizations that I as well support. But this year, I ask you to consider where your dollar will have the largest impact. If praying about that, I am confident many will see and know of the impact this ministry has had, with the limited resources. I ask you to consider giving to and helping this ministry out this year so we can do even more. I know we need it, and I know we have made a difference in the lives of so many. Don’t take my word for it; look at some of their comments over the course of the last 6 months. Then think about the fact, that God used this ministry to begin to not only open doors, but to have an impact on changing the lives of those often called, The Lost, The Last, and The Least. May we all continue to have a passion for the very types of people Jesus loved and spent time with.

I loved this blog and video, how anyone can be critical of the call to action that Christ has in our lives is beyond me. While the video is difficult to watch, it is certainly a reminder of the heartache Jesus must have over the horrors of war. Thank you for being an inspiration.

Mike, This is a timely message for me at this point in my life. There will be great reflection on what the Holy Spirit has shown me here this evening. I pray for More Love, For More People! I struggle to love, to care for others, to give attention to someone else rather than to my selfish ideas and motives....How caring, How loving was the Man that knows my heart, knows my thoughts, my motives, and loves this sinner anyway! thanks again Mike..... you hit the nail on the head..... one guy that I am impressed with is Rick Warren. I know that he gets some slack, but he is a reverse tither - living on 10% and giving 90% to the church. Through his book sales he gave all that he ever made back to the church so that he did not make a salary. He drives and older pickup. He owns two suits (of which he has had forever - I have seen both of them) and he has started some great ministries working with people overseas and to the people struck with aids.

I believe that it is time for us as leaders to get back to the fundamentals of our faith. Love God, love others, take care of the poor, the needy, the widows, the children, and take care of each other.

Thank you for addressing this touchy issue in a Biblical, loving way. We all need reminded as to the need to follow Christ as opposed to men or women. While there are those I appreciate in the ministry none of us are perfect, it is time we show the world that we know that. As a non Christian, I appreciate your take on this. I get so tired of people not addressing the issues within their faith systems. I must say, if more Christians addressed issues with this open and honest manner, I would be more inclined to consider their faith. I do think you could have been much harder on those you mention, but I understand that was not your intent.

Bro', what can I say, you are a man after my own heart (and spirit). You are right about judging, we are not told "do not judge", we are told how to judge. Our place is not to pass sentence. On being financially well off, I don't think God begrudges us being wealthy as long as we are good stewards with what we have. All Christians being wealthy? Yeah, right, like we can all handle money! My rule of thumb is I don't want more than I would be willing to give away to someone who needs it more than I do. I think a pastor, televangelist, etc., should have an income equal to the AVERAGE of his congregation. What do you think about that? If his flock's avg. income is 60K a year, that would be an appropriate income. If his flock avg's 1 Mil./year, that would be appropriate for him. If they avg. $30K/year, $100k is inappropriate!!! Just my opinion mind you. Brother, God bless you for what you do. I will pray for you will be financially blessed to meet your needs and a little more.

Wow, Mike, you took this in a direction different than what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised, though.

For me, I also see the evident hypocrisy in Haggard's strong push against gay rights while living a double life of drug addiction and hidden sexuality. Growing up in conservative Christianity, I saw over and over again those who harped on "standards" the strongest eventually be unmasked as having a double life, often involving the very things they railed against. From a psychological standpoint, though, this isn't surprising.

I don't know that I would call myself an evangelical anymore. The intolerance, fundamentalism, and misplacement of priorities among that movement have turned me off to it. I may still qualify as a "liberal evangelical" (i.e. Tony Campolo or Jim Wallis) but I am no longer comfortable with self-applying that term. "Christian" works fine for me, although I am also considering "Quaker" or "Friend."

Wonderful blog. I think it is necessary to bring to light what is wrong within our Christian faith. I do know that God does wish for us to prosper. But to many times people associate prosperity with financial wealth. One thing I truly believe is that as Christians we are called to some form of ministry or another. Again unfortunately most people when the they hear the word "ministry" they are thinking the pulpit or going to Africa, etc. We believers are in some kind of ministry and God gives us gifts and the ability to minister to others through various areas. My wife for instance has her own ministry by maintaining a clothes closet in my home town. I truly see the word of God come through her and God's love shining his love and light through her kindness and love. God has taken her gift and love of folding and washing clothes and taught her how to use it for His glory.

And you my friend have an awesome ministry. Keep up the good work.

Yep, this blog pretty much got it right. The whole "ministry as a business" has always been something the sincere unbeliever can stumble over. (and the numerous sexual scandals over the years gives SO much ammunition to the anti-believer, who is a different category). Best point for ALL of us: while you SHOULD be able to look at a professing Christian and see Jesus, it doesn't always happen. Look at JC, and forgive his children, and call sin, SIN. Great Blog Mike, one thing though that you do not mention is the need to be praying for those in leadership. Too often in the western church, when leaders fall it turns into a feeding frenzy. I am not saying that is what you are engaged in, but I do see it happening and it grieves me. Throughout the last week I find myself lead to pray for Ted Haggard and his family. There is necessary pain and there is unnecessary pain, and much of the public shame that the Haggards are going through is necessary for restoration. But much of the vitriol coming from the church is more heinous than the sins Haggard has committed. Scripture commends us to gently restore the brother who has fallen. Therein is the true measure of Christ! And that is the true glory of the Church.

Current Update:
A lot has been going on since the last issue. A lot of that is going to be touched on in this issue of The Virtual Pew News. Again, I encourage each of you to read through and see what God is doing. You can also gather information on things we desparetly need help with, including financial and more. A lot going on, and a lot upcoming, enjoy this issue of The Virtual Pew News.

On a personal level a lot is going on. Wrestling has started and that means a busy time. Pray that God will open up doors to do Church on the Mat at various tournaments, and that God will bless this end of the ministry as he has in the past. I am involved less in time requirements, but more in regards to ministry and quality opportunities.

Last note on a personal end, is we are getting ready to move. We are of course staying in the Wichita area, and plan to continue ministry to the inner city, and to those in the SW community in Wichita where we have developed relationships with in the past. God is good and things are looking brighter. Be in prayer as well as it looks like by the time the next newsletter comes out we will have rented our house in Oklahoma. Of course we still have out of pocket expenses involved there regarding making up the difference on the mortgage, but we know as do many others, this is not the best time to becoming a home. We are hoping for some changes come the first of the year in this area.

The Real St. Nick & Jesus

As most of you know we are always looking for ways to go on the road with the ministry. This season, for the first time, I am offering to perform The Real St. Nick & Jesus. I would really appreciate individuals contacting me regarding doing this presentation at churches, youth groups, businesses and then some. The show is appropriate for all ages, and as usual I will do some shows at no cost to appropriate charities. Anyone wanting to help sponsor those types of shows please contact me. I am willing to do the show for a love offering verses minimum expenses and will assure you that any group can afford this presentation. This is a unique and quality presentation using the character of St. Nick to present the true message of Christmas. Here is a paste up of the information we are sending out.

The Real St. Nick & Jesus is a one man presentation written by Mike Furches in 2002. The play follows the story of the real Saint Nicholas as told by Saint Nicholas. It looks at historical accuracies as well as the origin of contemporary legends Many will be surprised at the historical characters uncompromising faith and service. Receiving great reviews this play has been performed for three years. This the fourth year of the production is the first year the presentation has been offered for churches and various groups.

Mike has a grasp of the real St. Nicholas Character, devoting hundreds of hours in research. He also has played the role of Santa over the years at various locations around the Midwest. Many of those locations have him return each year because of the enthusiasm he brings to the role.

Financial Update:

The truth is, this ministry as you will read later has had a tremendous impact. For example over the last weeks I have begin discussions with Sky Lopez a former porn star regarding her new commitment to follow Christ. There is a lot to be said there, but I won’t delve more than to say, prayer is critical. I was also contacted by Rob Zombie a contemporary Horror Film Maker and Musician who has at the least been considered to be controversial. Rob contacted me to do an interview when he is in a current dead place, in other words, not doing any interviews or any media with anyone. Yet he contacted me to do an interview which I will be posting later this week. It will be available the next newsletter, or by visiting one of the web sites listed below. The contacts haven’t stopped there though, there has been counseling with numerous people ranging from financial, drug, homeless, spiritual and more issues. All of this takes time, time that requires my full attention.

For those that don’t know, The Virtual Pew has become a full-time ministry. I can’t believe how God has blessed it, and how spiritual needs across the globe are being met. It all comes at a cost though and the truth is, few have contributed to the ministry. The www.furches.org web site is under construction and making progress, but with that, is cost. There is also time requirements involved. One of the things many have noticed is my willingness to actually spend time with them, talking, via phone, in person, and over the internet. For those skeptical of a ministry like this, come spend the day with me, it won’t take long to see the impact The Virtual Pew is having.

Here is the current status of The Virtual Pew. We have had at a maximum $15,000 in our account. We now currently have right at $3,000 as of this writing. There are currently expected costs of $1,000 for web site services and other areas of ministry that we will incur within the next month. This ministry costs, and is going to require funds to continue. We need the help of various organizations, whether from speaking engagements, or donations. See the information at the conclusion of this page regarding how to give. We have made a point to mention our financial needs each month, but only once a month or so will we go into some detail as we have here. You won't see us begging for money, but you will see us mentioning our needs as we have here.

Writings since the last newsletter:

This includes the blogs and reviews that are read by millions each month. This month was uniquely different because of the doors of ministry that God opened up. This actually includes less than half of the comments. There has been unexpected ministry to those involved in the Porn Industry, Horror Industry, and much more. There is actually some discussion with several individuals who are contemplating moving to Wichita to become a more active part of The Virtual Pew. I have been involved in about ever ministry imaginable from counseling to those who are new to the faith, have strayed from their faith, to those asking questions about Jesus Christ. The ministry is broad and wide, and continues to be beyond anything we could have ever imagined; presently thousands are being affected by the ministry of The Virtual Pew. Was thinking exactly what prayer accomplishes for the believer and non believer = the lip service Christian if you will and I read somewhere someone wisely said, "Satan laughs at our toiling, mocks our wisdom, but trembles when he sees the weakest saint on his knees." Prayer is God's appointed way of doing God's work. I also understand it meets a hearts needs and in a way brings peace but that all seems part of it so I was wondering if any of my fellow Christians with perhaps better understanding, could share their thoughts?

I just read your "To Hell with the Poor". Those are things that I try to say, but you stated them so much better than I could. Living in Atlanta, GA, I see a lot of homeless folks. And most of the time, people walk by them without a second glance. Or they walk past looking disgusted. I am embarrased. These are people -- they are God's children too. They are our brothers and sisters!

There was a song out a few years ago by Everlast called "What it's Like". I would argue that that song offers a message that Jesus tried to get us to understand. That song says a lot of what you said in your blog.

I just got through reading your blog on the poor. It is unfortunate that so many have the wrong attitude towards this group of people. I really had no idea about this particular group of people until I got to experience it first hand in Nashville. Actually that trip was more of an outsider looking in, because due to our time constraints we pretty much just showed up and sang and then had to leave for a recording session that my friend Jerry Bennett had scheduled. After reading the following information from some of their materials and also found on their website at www.thebridgeministryinc.com, I was rather intrigued by what I read.

The video touched my heart in a powerful and dramatic way. I loved it! I first heard the Song Amazing Grace done to the tune of "The House of the Rising Sun" in the late 1970s at Church one day. It touched my heart so powerfully back then, and still today, especially to those who have lived that radically rebellious lifestyle steeped in Racism, Perversion, and the depths of darkness; Thank GOD for the vastness of HIS GRACE and MERCY; and the fact that HE places our sins in a sea of forgetfulness never to be remembered again! Me and my father used to watch jackass on mtv, we loved that show. Mom hated it but we watched it anyways. Women can be dumb I tell you, sometimes. I basically leave for Iraq in 2 and a half weeks. Things have really been looking up and I am looking forward to what the future holds, though I have to admit I am slightly nervous, but not as freaked as I was before. Gods grace is sufficient.
Hmmmn, I honestly don’t know what to tell you about the ministry stuff, its not my expertise. The enemy does have ways of discouraging us though. I have a few of your blog, including the most recent one ( To hell with the Poor)

I found it beautifully written and very down to earth. So much that I am reminded that there are, in fact, good people in the world. But enough complements, lest your head get big lol.. heh.

The part where you write about how some churches are not reaching out of there 'comfort zone' was great. I mean, preaching is good, but after a while, you are preaching to the choir, and no one in progressing. Leaving them ( the church patrons) isolated. Religious leaders influence or help influence the minds of their listeners. If we could get more to discuss things that are important to each area's surrounding problems.

I mean, We have a high crime rate in Louisiana. Yet we have a lot of churches.. I just don’t like the picture of a beautiful bright white painted church surrounded by gunshots, debris, and poverty. Shouldn’t Churches be like seeds?

I should think more about think this, and I will.
Keep doing what you do, people really do appreciate it.

I was listening to Joyce Meyer the other day and she said have ever thought that maybe you wouldn’t have as many problems if you'd stop focusing on yourself and focus on Jesus, But that doesn't make sense to the mind if I'm going to fix myself I need to focus on myself but then she said, Jesus asked peter 3 times "Do you love me" Peter said yes lord I love you, "Then feed my sheep" Joyce then said so get off your butt feed his sheep and focus on Jesus and he will fix u we have all been sent to love and help someone to Jesus...

In my mind, this is the best blog I have read from you -- and I think you have some good ones! I really like the way you say this:

I know many use the old cliché, hate the sin, love the sinner, but in reality, and in practice, there is a fine line there that the overwhelming majority of Christians seem to cross. I say love the person, and let the Holy Spirit convict the person of the sin."

I agree -- how can we say "hate the sin, but love the sinner"? I would rather say, "Because we are all God's children, and therefore related, I love everyone." I may not agree with everyone, but God loves them, so how can I do any less? I know that sounds corny, but that's what I feel that God is saying to me.

Anyway, not to get off on a rant -- but great job!

I notice you where a pastor. I just started going back to church. I want to study and learn the bible and maybe one day be some kind of pastor to teach the word to others. I was wondering, since you were a pastor and probably know the bible good. If I could use your help on my quest. Help me understand the bible as I read and study it. I go to church but I could use more help. Different kind of point of views.

I just started going to a house of god church, but I always been and grew up in a Baptist like background. I ma noticing the differences between the two. This church I go to now, they where speaking in tongues today. What can you tell about speaking in tongues what does it mean and is that good or evil?

Well I made it back onto Myspace.com , amazing what you'll do when you have time and nothing but time. Its good to see your still going strong and I love the topic because Ephesians is something that my church back in Okinawa could learn from .

I fully agree with what you say! Now with America turning into a 'service economy’ (high tech jobs and other well-paying jobs being sent overseas, leaving either management/executive jobs or flipping burgers), I believe there will be many more poor! It's sad that I was a waitress in 1988 and making $2 and hour (plus tips) and today waitresses still make $2 an hour plus tips...... people don't tip THAT well!!!! Anyway, there needs to be training for the poor, and middle class jobs need to be brought back to the U.S. Sending them overseas is only doing one class well.... the greedy executive class!!!!! Anyway, enough of my soap box.

The church is out of touch with reality....and needs a few more titles like your blog title to shake them up a little!

A friend sent me this blog entry and I am grateful for it. I am not recognized by my church for what I do in ministry to the broken and damaged, because I have been broken and damaged myself and do not always give the perfect and consistent demeanor that church approved ministers must have. I am a tattooed, divorced single mother going to college and struggling to get by on financial aid. I used to be an addict and homeless and have had my bouts with mental illness. I get better every day because of the people that have cared for me in spite of myself. I now care for those that God sends me. I love them because they let me. I pray for the ones that are so wounded that they will not let me care for them. I believe there is always room, there is always time, there is always a place for the least of my brethren. God is good, and He has not forgotten those He has blessed with His true nature and understanding.

Amen Mike! Your posts are always interesting, intriguing and often quite convicting. One thing I have (slight) reservation on is your quote: "I will assure you, God's kingdom, and God's Church, is one that accepts people where they are. True love of God's family will result in getting to know and accept each other, despite differences." As long as we are talking about believing Christians I would agree. Too many times I hear the "God will accept you the way you are" and have to cringe in my beliefs. If there is repentance involved I am certainly with you. I do find it strange when different cultures "accept" Christ but will not in turn reject their cultural idols. I know...it could be a long debate and in the end it all depends on being or not being Christ centered which point I believe your post brings home. Love it brother!

I too, have received quite a few negative comments about who I have on my page. Over the summer, I had one of my husbands friends not only reject my request because a person on my page was a lesbian, this person completely shunned me for an entire weekend that my husband played at his "Christian Music Festival". It breaks me heart to hear people say how much they love God then totally reject his people! As I scrolled through my friends list I asked "Which one of these people does God love more?" The answer? ALL of them.

Those people you were talking about who left you friends list...They just need to open up. There are so many people who NEED Jesus!! We all do, but those who are lost need him and if we don't befriend those that don't believe, how will they ever find God's wonderful, most awesome and forgiving love? Way to go! I totally agree!

You seem very educated, and you seem to have a pretty good grasp on what Christianity is all about. We are not worthy to pass judgment on others, that is for Him alone. I've been a Christian for quite a while now. I'm far from perfect, and still have a lot of growing to do myself. People that don't agree with your choice of friends, because of what is involved in their past, still have a lot to learn about Jesus Christ and what he's done for us. Keep strong, and take it all with a grain of salt. I have Sky Lopez on my friends list as well, and while I've never had the opportunity to actually meet her, if I did, I would not only congratulate her on her decision to accept Christ, but support and encourage her as well. So Sky, if you're reading this, don't let the words of others discourage you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Interesting...my Sunday school class was just discussing this very topic. I think sometimes Christians get church culture mixed up with Christianity...and have never really looked at who Jesus was or what he said or did...and very few ever answer that questions WWJD and then DO it! Thanks for expressing that LOVE is more powerful than criticism or chastisement or ostracism...and will win out every time! My parents have brought me up with the ideal of thinking about things and forming my own opinions of people. They instilled strong beliefs in me that were Christian. Just because people diverge away from those, doesn't mean that they aren't Christian, it just means that they look for other answers in unsavory places. God said to Adam and Eve, "Don't eat from the apple tree" and they did, they introduced sin into the world by doing that. It is called free will. We can listen to music that we like, watch films that we like, and like people that we like. Those so called Christians that criticize you for liking people are unsavory don't realize that you still have Jesus in your heart when you do the things that you do. God installed into us a conscience and that made us realize what we do is either wrong or right. People just think that because of a music video, or a movie a person does, that it reflects them. I feel that is judgmental of them and that is what is sorta wrong with people these days. They are quick to judgment. Great job, Mike! :)

Wow! I love it! I was raised in a strict Primitive Baptist home. My parents obviously despise my art. They made my 17 yr old brother delete his myspace account when my sister called my profile to their attention. I've had a very poor relationship with them since I left home 10 years ago because of...many things. I also constantly struggle with God and the religion I was force-feed. I honestly cannot Biblically defend my work, but it's nice to see someone responding to "Christians" with the spirit in which you do. "In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves." I don't know the reference. I applaud you. While you're praying for Skyy, say one for me too. I need it.

You are so right in what you are saying....it made me think back to when you and I first started to correspond to each other and I shared with you my favorite scripture....Romans Chapter 14...which is also a very fitting scripture for your blog as well....and it is often this scripture that I try to follow in my life...Jesus dwells in us all and some of us may not walk with him but for those who do walk with him...should always welcome those who may be weak in faith for you never know how your walk may lift someone up. Never should we judge and cause one to stumble...we as Christians are simply called to be like Jesus. Not one sin holds more weight than the other...so to assume as Christian we are better than those that aren't is ridiculous....we are all sinners. I'm sorry people give you a hard time...but you keep doing your thing...because there are a lot of us out there that you touch and reach out to .... Facing the Fear and Anxiety of the Unkown

All most everybody worries about what will happen in the future. The prospect of not knowing if something good or bad will happen to you in the near future can produce a lot of fear and anxiety. As a result, here is a list of techniques and suggestions on how to manage this fear of dealing with the unknown.

Remember is that no one can predict the future with one hundred percent certainty. Even if the thing that you feared does happen there are circumstances and factors that you can’t predict which can be used to your advantage. For instance, let’s say at your place of work that you miss the deadline for a project you have been working on for the last few months. Everything you feared is coming true. Suddenly, your boss comes to your office and tells you that the deadline is extended and that he forgot to tell you the day before. This unknown factor changes everything. Remember: we may be ninety-nine percent correct in predicting the future, but all it takes is for that one percent to make a world of difference.

Learn to take it one day at a time. Instead of worrying about how you will get through the rest of the week or coming month, try to focus on today. Each day can provide us with different opportunities to learn new things and that includes learning how to deal with your problems. When the time comes, hopefully you will have learned the skills to deal with your situation.

Sometimes, we can get anxious over a task that we will have to perform in the near future. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. For instance, you and your team have to play in the championship volleyball game in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that you’re playing in front of a large audience. By playing the game in your mind, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self-Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation and increase your self-confidence.

Remember take a deep breath and try to find something to do to get your mind off of you anxieties and stresses. A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper, watch TV, play on the computer or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things. This will distract you from your current worries.

A lot of times, our worrying can make the problem even worse. All the worrying in the world will not change anything. All you can do is to do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it in stride. If you still have trouble managing your anxiety of the future, then talking to a counselor or clergyman can be of great help. There are ways to help manage your fear and all it takes is some effort to find those answers.

A Message from Curt A Soldier on His Way to Iraq / Discouragement

Curt is a real friend I have developed a friendship with at MySpace. We have spoken several times on the phone and interact back and forth via email on a regular basis. Curt recently published this in one of his blogs and I decided, with his permission to post the blog. Be in prayer for Curt in that as you read this, he is being shipped out to Iraq October 18, 2006.

One of the biggest tools that the enemy of those that belong to King of Kings is discouragement; This is one of the tools the enemy uses on me the most. Cause things to happen that many times are beyond my control, and slowly keep grinding away on me slowly and before I know it, it feels like hope is lost. I see others in their walk with the Lord and it seems like things are going good, but they are not actively fighting in the cause and untargeted by the enemy. I watch others who are actively in the fight, and the same war is being fought on them until they are taken out of the fight. Stay in the fight, and the fight will come to you. Take yourself out of the fight, stop seeking the Lords guidance, and life will probably be a hell of a lot easier. Which one are you going to pick? What path?

If you have picked the easy route, and you are not facing any spiritual battles, a few or if any circumstances that put pressure on you. You’re not in the fight. Satan has you where he wants you, happy and content in your own little world. By all means, keep taking the easy road, having a chill life and not doing a damn bit of difference for the kingdom. You might have a good life but it will not be interesting, you will have very few stories that will be of any interest to listen to, something called battle stories. Of engagements fought with enemies of the cause of Christ, or being able to play a part in seeing someone’s heart being changed before your eyes by him.

If you are in the fight, the people that give you the most trouble and hardest time are not the problem, they are just pawns in the enemies game to grind you down, and take you out or back down and be silent when it requires you to speak up. Worse will be the attacks when it requires action.

Take heart if you are facing attacks one after another, physically and spiritually. It means you are still in the fight. When circumstances put pressure on you to back down, fight tooth and nail to not become discouraged. Seek his face and he will strengthen you, to be able to face the boss who is giving you a hard time, or someone who disappoints you, to be able to forgive and still be there for them, no matter what. God requires us men especially, to fight for our sisters in Christ, pray for them that they may resist his attacks, actively intervene for them. Encourage one another, especially those you know who are in the fight, stories of attacks can be shared, "war stories" and in that itself can be enough, to know you are not alone. Me and a Lieutenant who is saved share stories a lot, of difficult times. And it helps a lot.

Thoughts from the day; I have dealt with one thing after another this week and today was doing some thinking and it just clicked. I was able to finally see the big picture for this week. Love days where I get to see the battlefield from afar.

Our salvation is our insurance policy...so fear not. Join the fight. The easy road is just that, easy and uninteresting.

If you don’t know Jesus and are not in the fight...you’re missing out. It’s not easy but fun at times, painful at others, and worth the stories.


Church Referrals, We Are Sending People To The Local Church!

One of the common misconceptions is that we are building a online church and not supporting the local church. How wrong could that assumption be. We recognize and accept the fact that less than 50% of Christians actually attend a local body. We also recognize and accept the fact, that unless things drastically change in the near future, that in less than 10 years it is projected that less than 25% of all Christians will be involved in the local church. We also recognize that many, for whatever reason have been turned away from the church, both Christians and non Christians. It is the hope of The Virtual Pew to meet the spiritual needs of individuals who are not in church, with the hope of plugging them back into local churches when possible. Not a month goes by where we don’t have this opportunity. Since the last newsletter we have referred three individuals to specific local bodies in their communities. In each of those we contact the local church, with the contact information and something about the individual. We also continue to see The Virtual Pew grow in numbers as we expected. While three people since the last newsletter may not sound like much, to the kingdom of God, it is a big deal. It is safe to say, God is using The Virtual Pew to help His Kingdom, and, His Church.

I have been asked many times who it is that does my cartoons. Well that friend has just joined MySpace and after getting his approval now have permission to share his information. His name is Dave Weiss and you can click on his name to go to his MySpace page. You will see how new he is in that I am his first friend and his page is plain and I am sure Dave will have it up and going in no time.

Dave is a great artist, who does a lot of great cartoon work. I first came to know Dave when we wrote for a web site called Crosshome.
