Welcome to The Virtual Pew Newsletter, a lot has been happening but with that said, I hope you take the time to read through the entire newsletter.

As many of you know, the web site for The Virtual Pew has been down. Long story made short, I had the web site for the book, The Keystone Kid put up and thought I had someone to do the site for The Virtual Pew for me. It hasn’t been done but not for the lack of trying. I am back at the place; I need someone dependable that can develop a simple web site, linking to various blog pages and a message board. Something that I can manage, update and change on a regular basis would be great. Either someone who can develop this site, train me on doing the site, or donating an appropriate program to do the site is much needed. Can you help with this particular need? Truth is, since the books publication, I receive daily communications related to abuse, and related to the ministry related to The Virtual Pew. This is an area of need that you can contribute to in one of the above mentioned ways.

I realize it may be possible that you haven’t been to the web site for The Keystone Kid. The url for that is www.thekeystonekid.com I am pleased with the book and it has been doing well. As is the case in many things of the sort, I haven’t seen the royalty checks as of yet, but am aware of a good number of books being out there, either via hardback, paperback, or e-reader versions. I continue to schedule speaking engagements to share the story of what God did for me in either short presentations in as little as 5 minutes where I have the book available, to longer presentations where I speak and share the story for upwards to 45 minutes. There are other topics I am available to speak on. The book is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retailers, either on line or via ordering through the store. You can also go to Friesen Press and order various versions suitable for various e-readers, including, Sony, The Nook, and more. Amazon has the Kindle version available on their web site.

The book is critical for me now as I have made a decision related to Mosaic Church, the brick and mortar church I pastor. I am reminded of a verse of scripture that states that if a church or ministry can, they should pay their pastor twice their worth. In that same passage though, people forget where it says, if paying the pastor creates a burden on the body, then he is to receive no salary. I have urged Mosaic to relocate to downtown Wichita. In order to acquire the space, since we lost funding from The Church of God, I have voluntarily given up my salary until the church can afford it. Don’t get me wrong, I pray that there are times the church can pay me some, but it really isn’t that big of a deal. Even when the church can afford it, it is still my hope, desire, and prayer that we obtain additional salary from contributions to The Virtual Pew, speaking and so forth and use the money from the church for various other ministries. The truth is, most of the money coming into The Virtual Pew, (albeit minimal) actually goes back out to direct ministry, whether assistance to the homeless, or some other form of direct ministry and help.

You can of course help in a variety of ways by donating either to The Virtual Pew, or to Mosaic Church. I will share addresses for those at the conclusion of the newsletter. Now for those who are curious, the last 2 months I have received nothing from Mosaic, the month prior to that $800 and the month prior to that $600. Of course I also pay my own expenses including mileage. Last month via The Keystone Kid and speaking, I received approximately $500, and the month prior to that, $400, and the month prior to that, $2,700 which enabled me to focus more on Mosaic without having to work on booking myself out to speak. I expect there will be months where larger amounts come in, but all in all, it is clear, God continues to meet our needs. I am also expecting a royalty check from Friesen Press this next month, I am not certain how much that will be but I expect it to be less than $500. I do by the way; have a good supply of books available, both in hard back, and paper back that you can order directly off of the web site or through me. The prices for those are $20 for paperback, $30 for hardback. I have donated a good number of books out, (over 20) and have a few people who have ordered books, with the promise to pay, that have not paid for their books.

Also in the works, not far from completion is the short movie The Long Walk. Currently Rob Cassels, Sam Eakins, Darrell Thompson, and Mark Childress from The Rob Cassels Band are finishing up the original score for the movie. It looks tremendous at this point and we are going to be submitting the film to various film festivals. We will also have a product available to market which will include commentary by the Director and myself, possibly others, it will also include a brief interview with me of what has happened since the book, a interview with a couple who have gone through their marriage whose life was impacted by abuse, and an interview with the pastor who led my mother to Jesus. There is editing and work to be done on the special features of the DVD to be made available for purchase. Pray for all of this though, pray that it will be accepted into film festivals, viewed by those who need to see and hear the story and be touched by the power of forgiveness. Also pray as we seek to shop the short to major companies in order to raise funds for a feature film. For those who have seen this work, they are impressed, and many have stated how God is clearly involved in the project. That will confuse some as the short itself is a variation of the story in The Keystone Kid, and it is not a clearly overt ‘Christian’ project. There is even rough language and difficult situations in it. However, with the special features, and the discussions which will take place at film festivals, it will be clear of the role of Jesus Christ in the story. We will also be listing the Short on Kickstarter at Amazon where individuals can contribute to help support the project financially and get perks for their donations and support.

Now as to Mosaic Church, the brick and mortar church I pastor. I alluded earlier that we had relocated. Mosaic has a unique history. In its early days, (prior to my arrival) Mosaic met in an arts community of Wichita called Delano. It had an effective impact on the community but eventually the church moved to a school. After 3 school transitions, the church was ready to dissolve. I came on board and shortly thereafter we relocated to a community that seemed to fit our current needs. As we came close to outgrowing that facility I recognized the need to get back to the mission God had called us to. We had seen tremendous success in two areas of ministry that our people seemed to support and we were seeing it impact others in the community. The two areas were ministries to the homeless and the arts community, specifically the filmmaking community. We decided to look for property in the downtown area. Gay Quisenberry, who was the manager for Rich Mullins assisted us in the quest. We located a building downtown that had sat vacant for 10 years. A long story there, but after 3 months of issues, we finally moved into the facility.

The Downtown Mosaic location encompasses approximately 6,000 square feet. We are less than 1 block away from the largest homeless gathering in the city of Wichita and less than 2 blocks from the center of Downtown. We have a month to month lease on the property. There is a rumor that an outside agency made an offer on the building, but it is only a rumor. We will counter offer on anything that is actually offered. So far, all indications are this is a rumor. We continue to move forward knowing that God will provide. We have had 2 services in the building, and this last week, we had our first pot-luck meal since moving out of the location on George Washington Blvd. We had over 40 in attendance if counting the approximate 10 homeless individuals who showed up. Our desire is to have other churches, businesses, ministries, and individual’s partner with us. We need groups to provide food on a weekly basis on both Saturday and Sunday to reach out to the homeless. We feel strongly of the need to find a way to fit everyone from the downtown community, including the homeless into a physical brick and mortar church where they can fit in and are a part of the family of God. We desperately need other groups to partner with us. Please pray that the churches of Wichita would come together to do the work of God together.

One of the other things we are also exploring at this point is the possibility of developing a clubhouse concept, (based on the Fountain House Model) for the homeless. Here, as opposed a day shelter, we would assist in the development of what we call the Work-Ordered-Day and assist in helping persons obtain affordable housing, and appropriate jobs through a Transitional Employment program that helps in relearning work skills. We need volunteers for this program, and after some commitment, we will be able to get funding. The operation of the program will help the homeless regain their life, not just sustain their condition.

Mosaic is also allowing the use of our space for various groups including: Novus Orsa a group that originally helped us with our homeless outreach. A part of the Vineyard Church in Wichita they assist in helping young homeless persons obtain housing. Others using our facility include, Axis Four Films an Independent Film Company, The South Central Kansas Film Co-Op, and Gay Quisenberry. Gay is also helping us with events, including concerts, theater, grants and more.

My wife Mary Jane teaches at Derby Middle School and is in the process of looking at retirement. We don’t know where that will take us, so please pray for us. I realize the blessing I have in my wife. Also pray for our son Nathan. Some of you know the complexity of that request, I will simply say, it is our desire for our son to return to the God who loves him. We want him to dedicate his life to the King of Kings. We keep our granddaughter Aaliyah every weekend and we are blessed to do so. She comes to church with us and we realize the importance of our time with her. Our daughter Marathana, and our son in law Brett are expecting their first baby, a little boy in June. She works at Hesston College in Hesston Kansas, just north of Newton Kansas where she lives. She is the Director of Communications for the college and is actively involved with her husband in their church. We still have our White German Shepherd, named Kersey and just adopted a little Yorkie named Buster. They both bring some joy into our lives and our granddaughter loves them.

I continue to write, and lately, it seems like I have done a lot of movie reviews. Some of them I can recommend others I can’t. I can say however, I have tried to review each movie with the intent of you learning something that you can share with someone whether you have seen the movie or not. I always do my reviews as a seed that can point people to God.

I continue to covet and value your prayers for the work God has called me to. It is an honor to know that some of you have partnered with these ministries over the years; I suspect there are people who have touched that we don’t know about. My faith tells me that some day we will. I am aware of people who have been touched, come to know God and in a relationship with him because of this ministry. For those of you offering prayers of support, and/or financial help, I thank you.

The Virtual Pew News 24, Book & Movie on the Way

Greetings, I figured it was time for an update regarding the on goings in the Furches Family, The Virtual Pew, and Mosaic Church.

It is likely obvious to the faithful that things may have appeared to be slow and not as much going on with The Virtual Pew lately due to the lack of postings. The truth is, nothing could be further from the truth. Let me explain.

Over the last few months a lot has been going on that has kept us pretty busy, including increasing some of the work with the Homeless in the area. This has been a tremendous ministry that is ongoing. Imagine having a homeless person thank you for a coat because they were afraid of dying I the freezing conditions, or another that is now living independently that you are helping understand the concepts of salvation and taking to church. Of course there is the need for some of these to provide Bibles and The Virtual Pew has done that. We have planned for February 27, our next big outreach where we will again take food, hot beverages (hot chocolate is the favorite) and of all things at their request, socks and shoes. Of course we need donations of each of those items. The Virtual Pew also purchased for Mosaic a larger coffee pot which allows us to make larger quantities of Hot Chocolate, Coffee, and Mocha. At Christmas we provided over 150 coats and items of winter wear, plus over 150 gifts that went to needy families. It was wonderful to see the community come together for all of this and we have an angel of a friend from another church who has also been helping out with some of the finance and cost involved. We will continue to accept designated donations for this ministry of which 100% of the designation will be used. We plan in the next three months to work at doing this on a weekly basis, and we would love to have a downtown facility to host the church, do a daily homeless outreach, provide housing for my wife and I, plus have overflow housing for the homeless. A note on this, I have never seen it like it is now. The majority of homeless that we are doing ministry to are not mentally ill. That is not to say there isn’t a large population of this group on the streets, there are, but the majority of people it seems as if we are ministering to are individuals who have fallen on bad luck, from loosing their jobs to having their homes foreclosed on. Of course working with this and providing some needed manpower is the fine folks of Mosaic Church, Chris, James, Mary and Mary, Adam who was at one time homeless as was Robert, Richard, his daughter and many, many others from Mosaic and other churches who have donated items and money. Associated with this ministry, we will also be making the purchase of 2 nice Bibles this week to give to individuals who have been a part of this ministry.

The Virtual Pew has also been busy, along with Mosaic at continuing the ministry of The Mosaic ARC (Abuse Recovery Center.) We continue to see and speak to individuals that have gone through physical and sexual abuse. While we had an anonymous contributor for some time, those contributions have stopped and we are again providing services without the ability to reimburse one of the persons helping with the counseling. We still provide the services for whatever the person can afford to contribute and outside of the first meeting never mention the need to contribute. I give all moneys donated for the services I provide back to the church which covers the overhead of the meetings. I receive a direct salary from the church of $1,000 per month, and when money is available after designated ministry contributions, and available funds, I take a maximum of $300 per month from The Virtual Pew. It was nice to have 2 months, December and January, where I was able to draw that salary. I have not been able to draw a salary for the month of February, and normally not for an additional 7-8 months of the year. We do have a couple of people who are tithing and contributing to The Virtual Pew on a monthly basis and this allows us to continue the ministry work we do and for those individuals from Ohio, Florida, and occasionally other locations, we are extremely grateful and want you to know God is using your contributions.

The Mosaic ARC program is something I value as I get to see the help this program provides. We would still love to present in the Wichita area for no charge, and around the country for expenses to present on the subject of physical and sexual abuse. I must challenge the church on this issue, please make an effort to educate your people. I just spoke at length this week to an individual who had a church small/cell group tell him that God caused the abuse in their life to happen so he could use it. Please understand the serious mistake of this theology in that you are saying God uses and causes sin so he can accomplish his purpose, but you also have no idea how much you can turn others away from God with this message, it is devastating and the truth is, God is so perfect, so holy that he don’t make sin happen. While he can turn something which was meant for evil and use it for good, it is a totally different concept than saying God caused it to happen. I unfortunately run into this type of issue on a regular basis and I pray the church would show compassion, and be a part of helping the person recover from this horrible sin perpetuated to and on them, not make it worse.

There is more about what is going on with our ministry but I will share that after the information regarding Mosaic Church here in Wichita.

I am amazed at how God is blessing this church. We are continuing to grow and if everyone is there we are at capacity for our 50 or so seats. If we continue this trend over the next few months we will be discussing among leadership the need to go to two services. We also have contributing needs related to the facility. There has been heating and furnace issues since we moved into the facility. We have received in the past resistance from the landlord to fix those problems and many of those problems which I don’t think we should have been responsible for we had to fix. One such example is this last months gas bill of over $750. I am confident that there are other units in the facility that we are paying for due to the issue related to the furnace problems. I am praying that another facility would either open up, or that God would work on the heart of the landlord to fix this problem. I personally would like to move towards the purchase of a facility that could seat upwards of 125, (in a coffee house style set up with tables) and then that facility be used as a daily outreach ministry, provide housing for my wife and I, and overflow or emergency housing for additional needed staff and the homeless. There is a huge need for this in the downtown Wichita area and our numbers and ministry would grow over being in a better environment, but ownership is going to be of incredible importance. The primary purpose of the facility would clearly be ministry and for this to happen, we would need help from individuals in the community and across the country who see the need for this type of ministry. Be in prayer about that as it is important to be accountable for the finances God has provided. While we receive $1,000 a month from our sponsoring agency, that will cease in the late fall, early winter of this year.

Mosaic has other good news, the tutoring program continues to grow and we are presently close to capacity for the students we can see without additional volunteers from the church and community. Currently we have 4 committed volunteers to help out, but we set as capacity 10 students with this number of tutors. Currently we have if everyone is there, 10 students. We will not be able to accept more students unless some of the present students either leave, or we pick up additional teachers.

Mosaic is also doing a Sunday school, movie themed class. So far we have been averaging 10 students and are presently doing a study from the movie The Book of Eli. We plan to use other movies at the completion of this study as well as music and more.

We also finally have a worship leader at Mosaic. Chris Marshall has been coming to Mosaic for sometime and participating on the worship team. The worship team and I recognized his ability in this area and granted him leadership. There has already been a noticeable difference for the team and for the church.

Now as to The Virtual Pew and my ministry; to the pleasure of some, to the concern of others two major things have been going on that is taking up a bulk of my time. Both of those are in relation to the story of The Keystone Kid. We are in final negotiations for a movie to be made by Tiroma Films out of Tulsa Oklahoma. I will be meeting with them for the final meeting within the next month. Currently review of the manuscript has been taking place for the writing of the screenplay. I have had assurance from Tiroma that 2010 is going to be the year for The Keystone Kid.

Many are also aware of the book The Keystone Kid. Here is the good news; another edit of that book is taking place to get it ready for publication. So far, with almost half of the book done, there has been a reduction of approximately 55 pages, and some 17,000 words. I personally believe it reads much better, and is certainly shorter than it originally was. On the publication of the book, due to time constraints and the advice of several others, I am likely going to self-publish the book. Despite having great reviews from those who have read it, the national coverage of the stories, there are still some serious time constraints. I am looking at what appears to be the best company available and the book will be available in both paperback and hardback, and the good news, also available with electronic media such as Kindle and Apple’s ipad. The company is also going to provide a national advertising campaign for print, radio, and television and I will be providing support for the book. There will also be insurance coverage on the book to encourage major companies to carry the book.

Now with both of the above areas, there is going to be some costs and fundraising that is going to have to be done. This is actually the case in most situations, especially related to independent film and self publication. That said, don’t be surprised if in the near future you hear about more issues related to this. While some have already helped with some of the initial costs related to the film and the book, we are close to being ready to see the fruit of these two efforts. I could say a lot more for now, but will for now, let the interest and thoughts perk.

That is what is going on for now, and I certainly thank each of you for the prayers, financial support, and encouragement. I am blessed to see God work every day, and while I personally have rough days and tough times, I still know how good God is and I am continuing to move forward, hopefully you are as well.

It is that time of year when most ministries are soliciting donations. A few of those donations have come into The Virtual Pew and I want you to know we are so grateful for those. We want to be clear though, from the outset, that even the smallest contribution can make a huge difference to this ministry. For those that know this ministry, you know we allow specific designations where those designated gifts can go directly to the area of need you request. Those individuals will also know that we make every effort with the contributions to make the Christmas season a special season especially for children in need, more about that later, but first a quick break down of contributions over the last year.

So far over the last year The Virtual Pew received in contributions a total of $5,502. Of that, $3,420 went out to direct ministry, including gifts to children, assistance in living expenses for individuals, counseling expenses and more. We also received $350 in contributions to The Virtual Pew for the Mosaic ARC program of that, 100% was given to Mosaic to help cover expenses for the Mosaic ARC program as well as contribution of salary to another individual who is helping with the counseling for Mosaic ARC. Therefore of a total of $5,502 given to The Virtual Pew, $3,770 went to direct ministry, and $1,732 was used for expenses to travel to Tennessee for my mothers funeral, and other ministry related expenses such as printing, travel, phone and so forth. Hopefully this helps show the significance of the contributions given, and the reality that the overwhelming majority of contributions are given out to direct ministry.

Now as mentioned earlier you can designate gifts and those designated gifts will be used for the ministry request via 100%.

Christmas Giving for Families and Children, 100% of designated goes specifically to the area you request.

Here we have adopted several families to give to, with the economy the way it is, it is very difficult for some families.

Let me tell you about one of the families, one is a lady who has had a very difficult life including being prostituted out in the past, having 3 small children and very little income. This family is active in a church and is making the effort to walk with God. This family also had a child commit suicide several years ago. For this family we need the following types of gifts.

For the mother – clothing sized extra-large, basic gifts.
For the husband – Clothing, large, - extra large, basic gifts
Boy Aged 6 - clothing for a husky sized 10, toys, this child likes army related toys.
Boy Aged 3 – clothing sized 4 toddler, toys, this child likes sports related items, trucks, cars
Girl Aged 5 – clothing sized 6, she likes princess related items and baby dolls.

Another family

Girl Aged 3 – clothing sized 4 toddler, a coat, boots size 11, any other clothing items, likes interactive games and puzzles
Boy Aged 2 – he likes push and pull toys and toys you put things in. This child also likes music

Another family
Boy Aged 14 – Clothing Adult small, all kinds of clothing, he also likes cars and artistic types of gifts, including drawing, art and more.

Kids involved in Mosaic Tutoring program, we are looking for one gift per child, either clothing or learning related.

Ages of children in tutoring program are as follows:

16 year old boy
13 year old boy
10 year old boy
10 year old girl
7 year old girl

We are also seeking donations and contributions for the Mosaic ARC program which we help sponsor. The Mosaic ARC program is a program that provides recovery services for persons who have been physically and sexually abused. These services are provided despite ability to contribute for services. Currently we are seeing 3 people face o face, and provide phone counseling to 2 people. There are ongoing costs to this and 100% of designated gifts go directly to Mosaic.

General Contributions to The Virtual Pew. The Virtual Pew has ongoing costs associated with this ministry, from computer and web site maintenance, to supplies for the persons we are serving, costs of materials, printing, and minimal salary assistance. This ministry was featured last year in Dr. Charles Stanley’s In Touch Magazine and has done wonderful work with literally hundreds of direct contacts per year, and thousands of contacts via internet ministry. From our writings to our direct communication and interaction in social networking sites this ministry continues to grow.

Much is going on with our ministry, so much has happened in the last year, from the death of my mother, to the involvement with Tiroma Films out of Tulsa Oklahoma who is working on making a movie on my life. I am pleased with the things God has done, but nothing gives satisfaction like the daily interactions I am blessed to be a part of. From the counseling of sexually and physically abused individuals, to the encouragement in escaping sinful lifestyles and making the effort to get ones life back on track, free from such influences as drugs, gangs, abuse, sexual addictions, occult activity and more. We are also excited about the new ways we are opening up discussion with others who are outside the Christian circle, whether with individuals who are Atheists, Homosexual, or others.

God is still good, and we continue to see ministry take place. We see relationships strengthened, and people rededicate their lives to Christ on a regular basis. We also have the joy of seeing people make commitments to Christ, not just in a flash pan way though, but in a way where disciples and committed followers of Jesus come about.

I thank each of you who are receiving this for your prayers and support of this ministry in the past. The next year looks to have another bright future but will also have additional needs, especially once we start raising the funds for the movie which will provide hope to thousands who have experienced abuse in their life. I get to see the joy of the ministry, others have been blessed to also see the results of this ministry, ministry which wouldn’t take place outside of your generosity.

Now as is always the case. I appreciate the gifts, but want you to know, if you pray and feel the desire to give to another ministry, by all means do so. I have no problem with that, but truly seek to contribute to a ministry where your contribution will be used wisely and in the way it is needed. At The Virtual Pew of course we don’t have to maintain any jet airplanes, we don’t have to pay any large salaries, that is unless you figure the $700 or so in salary that I personally brought in last year a large salary. But pray about it, I challenge you to remember those Jesus instructed us to love and serve, the homeless, the widow, the person in prison, the sick, the needy, the orphan and the widow. While I am sure Jesus may be in many larger ministries, I am certain he is concerned and compassionate about ministries to the poor, his word indicates so, and I challenge you to support those ministries.

The Virtual Pew News 22 Mosaic Joint Venture

To all of my Mosaic and The Virtual Pew Friends and Family, time for the weekly update; please note this is going out as a national newsletter due to the needs of our new Tutoring program and Mosaic ARC, Abuse Recovery Program. Please read all of the way through as a movie link is attached and one I would encourage everyone to watch.

First to dispel a rumor I heard last week, yes there is a camping trip for Mosaic to Fall River. Some of us are leaving on Friday, and we won’t be back until Sunday evening. Of course if anyone wants to come at this late notice, that is perfectly fine and you are welcome. Some have suggested possibly coming down for a single day, Saturday, of course, that is also welcome. Now the big rumor I heard, someone said we were not going to have church on Sunday that simply is not true, we are going to actually going to be having church, albeit limited at Fall River, and we are also going to be having church at Mosaic. There will be a time of worship and sharing just as always. We have the tag Chris tag team taking on the responsibility and blessing of doing this, so, please, if not on the camping trip show up, enjoy and worship.

A few other things to make mention of, don’t forget; On Wednesday, we have tutoring classes from 4:30 – 5:30 and will be sticking around a little before and after to do some community outreach and painting in the ARC room. We want to complete this room, have it up and going by October 1. We still need to furnish the room and the following is some things we need in order to fully furnish the facility.

This is to go in the reception area and be for parents awaiting children in tutoring, or friends or family with individuals receiving counseling for the Mosaic Abuse Recovery Center.

The above services for Mosaic ARC officially begins October 1, so the sooner we receive these items the better. We are currently getting ready to paint the room and are soliciting donations. We are also seeing our first person and have had requests for further meetings in the future. Currently Debbie Elwood nor I receive any salary for this work which is provided on an as you can pay basis. Contributions to support this service are greatly appreciated. How important is this service, I want to leave a link for you to watch a documentary movie; Searching for Angela Shelton. We will be using this documentary and resources to help out with our program. An ironic bit of information, I went to school with one of the Angela Shelton’s in the movie from Erwin Tennessee, my wife’s hometown. I have been in contact with another Angela Shelton who is also from Erwin Tennessee and she was abused as well. To top it off, I have also received encouragement from the filmmaker, Angela Shelton in the documentary encouraging us in this service.

When watching the movie, I want you to notice the comment about how one individual couldn’t afford the services and therefore wouldn’t get the help. I just wanted to write to you to let you know that I was sexually abused by my father who was an alcoholic. I got pregnant at the age of 14 (not by my father), had a son and when he was one and a half I found out he had leukemia. He only lived to be 5 and died in 1987. After that I started on a horrific journey of choosing man after man that was just like my father. They were all drunks, druggies, and very violent. My 2nd ex-husband nearly killed me, beating me and leaving me in a river. I have endured a lot of pain in my life. I became an alcoholic and was addicted to prescription pills. I had 2 more children, a son 21 & a daughter 23 now. I practically raised them alone. I tried to commit suicide 3 times in 2006 and thank God I didn't succeed. Then 2 years ago I was so depressed and lonely that God sent a wonderful man to my front door and invited me to church and I went, 4 months later we were married. I have been happily married and serving God every since. I thank God everyday for the life lessons He has taught me and the people He has sent into my life. I pray that if there are others out there, being abused, they will seek help and tell someone! I never told anyone, it has been a long road to recovery but I am getting there.

Thank you so much for responding to me and my spilling my guts to you. I had just finished watching the movie and was just very emotional because I could relate to so much.

I've not shared my abuse story with a lot of people because when I was growing up that was just something you didn't talk about. I have lived here in Erwin most of my life, I know there has been a lot of female abuse here in this town. Most men here are very jealous, controlling, and violent. They feel very insecure or threatened if they don't have full control over their girlfriend or wives. I guess it's all a trust issue. I think the work God has called you to do is great. I have always felt in my heart that if there is at least one person I have helped today in anyway then today has been a good day! I hope my story will give someone hope that there is help for them if they will just tell someone they are being abused. Anyway, thank you so much I hope we can keep in touch. God Bless you and your family and your ministry!

The Virtual Pew News 21, Visit Those In Prison!

Today I am back on my regular routine, a lot has happened and this copy of The Virtual Pew Newsletter will have a lot of things to address, I hope and pray you take the time to review it. It will have updates regarding my life, the life of Mosaic Church in Wichita, and onogings related to The Virtual Pew.

The summer has been rather crazy, let me see if I can paraphrase for you in short notice the events of the summer so far: my son left home, he is with his girlfriend, they plan on getting married next May and they are expecting a baby. That said, God calls me to love my son, and his girlfriend, that don’t mean I agree with everything, but it is what it is. We are all called to love!

Next up, my daughter quit her job to finish her graduate studies and work as a graduate assistant at Wichita State University, shortly thereafter, due to the economy her husband lost his job and now times are going to be challenging. She is smart enough to have saved money for the mortgage payment for their house for a year. To hear her husband state it, “We have the house payment, but don’t know if we will have electricity or not.”

My wife had surgery on her foot and leg, this put a kink into things, I spent much of the summer home with her, helping take care of her, it was good, but at times stressing.

Then we found out our landlord, in the house we had a lease option to purchase on, filed bankruptcy. We are still in limbo here until it goes to court. Long story there, but oh boy, you can only imagine.

We had to put our little dog down, seems he became to aggressive, killed 11 chickens in 2 days, bit me, snapped at a little boy, and well, the Humane Society don’t rehab dogs like that

My wife got a band together; we played a number of concerts in June, and have more coming up. We opened for a band named SHEL from Colorado and was blessed to spend some time with that family over the summer, friends last forever.

My mother died. I made it home to be with her prior to her death, it wasn’t easy, and some friends helped make this trip possible. Apparently some people sent gifts that never got to us. If you were one of those making a gift, please let us know, some of those are obvious, others not since we never received some of the gifts. I don’t know what is up but we want people to be aware. We also received a kind gift from friends at Hollywood Jesus that allowed my wife to visit and be there with me for the funeral. Without their generosity, this wouldn’t have happened.

Then we have a movie company, TiRoMa films out of Tulsa that has committed to making the movie on my life. Right now they are reviewing the manuscript of The Keystone Kid, will work out a script and go from there. This is exciting.

We also provided through The Virtual Pew’s wrestling associations scholarship monies to various individuals in college. Two of those recipients, James Fox and Gage Deere are previous recipients of these small scholarships, but others have also benefited and we hope this aspect of our ministry continues. Thanks to those contributing to help make these opportunities available.

Now there have been other things going on, like at Mosaic. The church continues to stay alive, while we are running out of funding in October, we have hope of getting additional funding as we essentially went through a relaunch in June. While the church was funded for 3 years, only a year of that has been with me at the helm. For the first year there we built relationship and learned to love each other. After a year we started the regrowth process. We started this during the end of June, and it has been doing well despite the 3 weeks I had to spend in Tennessee helping my sister with my mothers’ estate. Mosaic needs additional funding to keep things going. We are at a vulnerable stage bu things look positive if we get that little bit of help over the next year.

Mosaic is starting a Abuse Recovery Center in October of this year. I and another individual at Mosaic, Debbie Elwood is starting this program. I have extensive experience as a director of Mental Health Rehabilitation programs and extensive experience in counseling. Debbie has her Masters from Emporia State University and has experience in counseling. This program will be a recovery center for persons of all ages who have been physically and sexually abused. It will be provided on an as you can afford basis and will be largely funded with outside contributions. Mosaic could use your help with this venture; NOW! For now, Debbie or I will be receiving a salary. We hope the program builds to where it will supplement financial needs of the church, plus provide additional salary needs for myself and a full-salary for Debbie. This is a dream of mine and we’ve already had some interest expressed from around the country. My story with abuse is fairly well known and we hope this opens up doors for ministry.

The article in Dr. Charles Stanley’s magazine In Touch, June Edition, opened many doors for ministry. I have provided counsel to an individual on the PGA tour, encouraged women and men across the country, spent time on the telephone, via letter, and face to face with people touched by my story. I want to offer a special thanks to Dr. Charles Stanley, but also Lisa Baker who wrote the story. While we have had no additional income come in, there has been a lot of ministry taking place. I want to touch on just a small sample of that ministry, and in this small sample, encourage you, and motivate you to do your part.

One of the areas I was not expecting to occur was the amount of email, letters and so forth I would get from prisoners or people incarcerated who found out one way or another about the story.

Let me explain today’s activities, at least as of 11:15 AM. I woke up, took my wife to car pool to work with a friend, and then went home to do The Virtual Pew updates. I showered at 8 PM (woke up at 6 AM) Then left to go visit a prisoner in work release whose family put us in touch with each other. Ended up getting to the work release program and the facility would not allow a visit. I then drove to the post office, picked up the mail, two letters today from inmates, one in Kansas, and another in Texas.

I drive straight to the coffee shop where I set up office a couple of days a week and started reading the letters and then writing letters of response to those inmates. I just finished, and will spend the rest of the day trying to do a little sermon work, some visitation, and then the writing and posting of this newsletter.

I want to share something that is consistent with the letters and contacts I am getting from inmates and specifically the two letters this morning.

The first thing mentioned in the letters is usually; (especially with a first letter) is how grateful they are to hear from someone. It seems as if they hear on occasion from all kinds of bad influences, but never from Christians. If what is stated is true, and I believe it is, Christians have little to do with inmates and often times Christians even hurt them due to their lack of concern. Apparently many of the inmates have hopes, and want to walk with Christ, but they need to know they are loved from those on the outside who are willing to help them in this journey.

This morning I thought of something, Jesus tells us to visit those in prison, now we have easy access to do this via letters. Now that said, nothing replaces a face to face, and for those I can, I attempt the face to face visits. This morning I told an inmate in Beaumont Texas I would visit him when I received designated funding to do so. I told him, I don’t have much money, but maybe someone will help fund this trip so we can spend 4 hours together on a Saturday and Sunday. He is doing what he needs from his part to help I am doing what I can, and hopefully you will do what you can.

I thought of something else I hadn’t thought of before. Jesus commands us to visit those in prison. Most of us don’t do it. I wonder what the response of Jesus will be for those who not only don’t visit those in prison, don’t write letters and when asked, still turn their backs on the very people God has commanded us to love. We know some want those letters, those visits, now we have them asking and some of us; including at times me, make excuses as to why we can’t do it. What would Jesus tell us in those situations?

Today I want to provide you information on one inmate who has made his requests public, listen to some of his words first though:

Gary went on in his 4 page letter to me, all hand written all seeking out a relationship with someone who knows Christ. He poured out his heart, but after spending 11 ½ years in prison. He was incarcerated again in 2004 for a 25 year sentence. He don’t have much more than time on his hand. Here is a captive audience who wants to hear more about Jesus, more about how we can share in life, and yet, not a single Christian has responded to his request. I am grateful he saw the article in, In Touch Magazine, I am grateful because I want to be used in a ministry that still reaches out to The Lost, The Last, and The Least. Why? Because Jesus has told me to, he has told you to, the question is will we be obedient.

Despite what some have said, the lies, the hate spewed at times towards this ministry, we continue. The rewards from a financial perspective are few, the rewards from a spiritual basis though, they are many, and thankfully daily. To know God chooses to use this ministry, to use me, and yes to use you in regards to the prayers you have offered and for some the financial support is an amazing place to be. I find joy in being in that place, not because I have done anything, but because Christ does it through me. Will you allow yourself to find a place where Christ can do something through you? I pray this is the case, because God is not good some of the time, God is good all of the time!

I have new friends, new family, I pray God doesn’t allow me to forget them. You can meet those people as well. I encourage you, write an inmate today, and become a part of their life. If you can’t do that, I would ask you to consider helping this ministry do that, if you don’t feel comfortable supporting this ministry, find a ministry you can support. I know God will meet our needs, of course that means some have to listen to the call of God.

I have another request outside of the regular requests though. We need ongoing support for our ministry, both in finance and prayer. I am asking for something special today, can you help make it possible to have a personal, face to face visit with Gary in Texas? It will require lodging in Beaumont Texas, (I am not opposed to staying at someone’s house) and I am not opposed to speaking while there to help with funds. But gas, would be needed, possibly some lodging down and back for the trip. I would also ask that help be provided to help pay someone to speak at Mosaic in my absence, I like to see to it that if possible, we can bless the speakers who fill in. This trip would take 2 days there, I could speak along the way, and 2 days back. It is close enough to my uncles’ house in Florida I could hop over and spend some time in the Panhandle of Florida or other locations near that Western Panhandle and speak in that area. I could make a week long trip or more out of it to speak in various places and share about this ministry. The intent though, is to spend face to face time with Gary. I told him this morning I would make the request. Maybe, just maybe, some will see the importance in a single, solitary soul seeking to see God.

Now I am asking something else, can you write to Gary, let him know you are different than other Christians who have ignored his pleas. He doesn’t need someone to preach to him, put him down; he needs someone to share the love of Christ. I ask you to do more, do more than most Christians who sit on their duffs and make excuses, do more to share the love of Christ with the very people he has called us to love. Do more to be the church, to be the bride that Christ is proud of cherishes. If you are already doing these things, great, remind others to do their part.

The Virtual Pew News 20 We Keep On Ticking Like a Good Watch

It is time again for that thereabouts monthly newsletter. I know it is a time you can expect to hear about our needs, but more importantly, I hope I can convey to you the reason the support is needed and the ministry that has taken place.

I have to admit, I continue to be blessed with how God has used this ministry. Since the last publication of the newsletter, between the reviews and all there have been a number of interesting things that have happened, including interviews with such people as Christian Music Pioneer, Pat Terry, movie and television icon, Michael Landon Jr. and much more. My most recent article, one the phenomena of Britain’s Got Talent contestant, Susan Boyle has received over 250,000 reads in two days. This is quite amazing actually, especially if you see and understand the spiritual truths I am trying to share in that article.

While I take some joy in knowing that people are reading the articles, I take even more joy in the one on one interactions, both in person and over the net. Take for example the communication I had with an individual in Florida on Easter Sunday. He asked a simple question, yet one that caused me to grieve over his loneliness. He asked actually two or three questions started with the premise, of: “Mike what would God want me for? Why would he even bother to forgive me?” This and other questions are often the root of the issues brought up by those seeking relationship and understanding about God. I am blessed to communicate with people who are hurting, people who are seeking, and people who are loved by the creator of the universe.

Some time ago I stated to a newspaper reporter that my main goal was to see this ministry touch one person a day. He was surprised as I think he expected me to have much loftier goals. I think what people forget though, is that each specific soul matters to God and so many times, ministries take the position that they are in it to reach all of these people. In the process, along the way, people forget about how important each specific, individual soul is to God. We use cliché’s all of the time, like; “Jesus would have died for you if you had been the only person on the planet.” Yet our actions show so often that we say these things but don’t really believe it. I know how much my own soul and life has experienced struggle and conflict, I know how many times I needed a savior who would save me from that conflict. I know how hard it is to trust individuals, including often times myself. In all of this though, I have also learned that God, through the person of Jesus Christ has never let me down. I have let myself down, I have been let down by others, but my God is constant. To be a part of a ministry that is taking this hope to people in a new and exciting way excites me. It is what drives me, it is my passion, to share the Good News of Love offered by Jesus Christ.

All of this takes time, it takes money. People ask; “How do I do it?” To be honest, it is hard, and it comes with great sacrifice. I realize I will never have much in a material way, but I also know that God has used me, my family, this ministry to touch others. I can honestly say, I think we have touched at least one person a day since the ministry of The Virtual Pew started some years ago. Many of you have contributed to that cause, and many of you are among the links in the chain that has been used to pull people out of the depths of despair, rejection, hurt and so much more.

The other truth is that we need money to survive. My salary between Mosaic and The Virtual Pew is approximately $1,300 a month, which comes out to, $15,600 per year. Out of that come all of my expenses, including taxes, retirement and then some. I have been dependent on the monthly contributions to help with this. The truth is, some contribute and follow through, thank you, and others have promised support and don’t follow through. Since January for example, we have had a promise of $1,600 which would take care of the needed $300 per month of need for salary and additional money for direct ministry. However of that $1,600 that was promised to The Virtual Pew, $800 is what has been received. Of this amount, I don’t keep it for salary, especially when needs arise. Of course it is difficult when needs arise and we don’t have the money to distribute as we desire.

Let me give two examples, this month there were four individuals asking for assistance from The Virtual Pew. I was able to help out 2 of those, but the other two, we simply didn’t have the money to assist. I will state, if making a pledge to The Virtual Pew, please do your best to honor it, it really makes a difference. As a result of some of those pledges not being honored and as a result of not taking my salary from The Virtual Pew this month other things have been affected such as my return trip to Tennessee to visit with my mother who is dying. I had originally intended to visit during March, and simply put, that visit has not been possible, and with each passing day, my mother continues to worsen. At this point, I don’t know if or when I will get to visit with my mother again.

I know that some get tired of hearing about the need, but the need continues to exist. I’ll be honest, it hurts when others ask for help, deserve it and we are unable to help them. We have stretched our dollars as far as we can, and have done what we can to assist others either via net or via in person. I am grateful for those opportunities, and I will continue at all costs to continue ministering to real people with real needs, one at a time doing what we can, for each soul really does matter to God, to me and the others who have supported The Virtual Pew, those aren’t just words, and they are truths.

Well that explains most of the ways we get in the support we need. Of course there is the store on the main Virtual Pew website where you can order things and we get a small percentage of those gifts. Also when you click on the banner adds at The Virtual Pew blog site we get a little, last year that came to a little over $100 so you can see it isn't much. Of course the more you check those out, the more we could get, but the main method of support is from you. I appreciate it and want you know that your financial and prayer support mean a great deal not only to us, but those we have the honor of ministering to. To that support, I say thank you.

One note here is that we lost one of our large supporters over the last year, Dale Howard of Tulsa to cancer last month. I know how much this ministry meant to Dale, and I know how much Dale meant to this ministry. Pray for his family and we thank God for the gifts and support Dale provided us over the last few years. The Virtual Pew News 19 - Reflections

I know it has been a while since the last newsletter but I also know many understand. I hope each person receiving this has signed up for The Virtual Pew updates and the Mosaic Church updates. There are links to do those things at each of the posted articles. Now on to the newsletter update titled, Reflections.

Today I want to reflect on the ministry I have with The Virtual Pew and Mosaic Church. One has to understand what drives me. I don’t know how better to explain that than to state some things I have been reflecting on lately.

I have been doing a lot of reading, a good thing; it means I am back in the gym. I have finished 4 books so far and am now reading another book by Creston Mapes, titled Nobody. I started reading it sometime ago but things got hectic, so 2 days ago I started it over. I am amazed at how similar things have been that I have been reading lately. It seems as if there is a lot of emphasis on helping the poor, the homeless, the downtrodden and so forth. Those things were illustrated to me today as I sat down and willingly and intentionally gave a homeless guy my absolute last $2. I concluded 3 weeks ago that I was going to do this after a Bible Study I was doing with Mosaic Church here in Wichita. Today, I practiced that concept, giving to the point of sacrifice, unconditionally to someone in need.

It seems as if finance has always been an issue. I grew up without money, have had to work for what I do have. I know in fact, because some have let me know, they take issue with the fact that as a ministry I ask for financial support. Some have been outspoken in public ways, not realizing the work and effort that goes out, or simply not caring, unfortunately this is an attitude that many have, and they simply don’t care about the poor and needy. Growing up poor, pride was a big issue; truth is, in some ways it still is. I actually hate asking for financial help, but it must be done.

I was talking to my wife last night; I don’t know if folks realize how hard I actually work in ministry. Just this week, I have been there to help encourage a girl going through abuse issues at home, a young man who is feeling rejected and left out, another who faces the certainty of becoming homeless, and yet another lady who feels rejected and abandoned, seemingly having no friends or people around her who understand. Believe me, I wish it were not so, but this is only a sampling of the work this week. These types of ministry, encouragement, love and so forth takes time, yet little income comes in. I don’t complain about that, it seems as if God always provides a way. I take some honor and am grateful in knowing some people give because they believe and know what we are doing.

While I haven’t “officially” taken a “vow of poverty,” it seems like that is par for the course. I am reminded; this is God’s work, not mine. Being a college graduate with graduate studies, and former executive experience, having made decent money, I know what I have given up to do this work, that said, when someone tells me, “Thank you, I don’t know what I would have done without you Mike.” Or, “Mike I really believe you have brought me closer to God.” I know that what I do can’t have a value placed on it. I also know, I am not doing this alone, each person who has helped, has helped me do this work.

I also know that sometimes people make promises, then for whatever reason, they realize they can’t follow through. I am okay with that but I do ask folks to prayerfully take seriously the commitments they make. I had numerous people who promised some level of help around Christmas when I went to visit my mother in the hospital. For a larger ministry, these things likely don’t matter, for a ministry like The Virtual Pew, it matters a great deal.

Right now, The Virtual Pew has $8 in our account, I don’t get paid from Mosaic until the last day of this month, and so far this month, The Virtual Pew has had nothing come in. In the next month, there is much ministry that needs to be done, for me to meet my basic financial obligations I need at least $300 a month to come into The Virtual Pew, for additional ministry, we need more than that. There are these needs plus the desire to spend more time with my mom in Tennessee in March, for that to take place, I need an additional $300-$500 to come in.

Many of us are only a few weeks away from being homeless. We live in a time where finances are tough, but if people gave $5 here, or $10 there, a huge difference could be made. I’m not talking specifically about The Virtual Pew, but various local ministries. My challenge is that each recipient of this newsletter would give money to smaller ministries that need it, maybe a local homeless shelter, half way house, maybe a home for battered women, any number of areas that signify you care for The Lost, The Last and The Least.

All of this said I feel great! I don’t make what I used to, but you really can’t pay to see the things I have seen happen. The great thing about it though, is each of you can take part in ministry. You can make a difference in the life of someone who needs it. I remember the words of the late Keith Green, “God wants you!”

At Mosaic, we are facing the same crunch other non profit groups and churches are. We really want to partner with local churches in the Wichita area; we need 10 people who can come on board at Mosaic that is spiritually grounded and mature enough to help lead a church to the place where we can make a difference. If living locally I ask you to consider Mosaic, if a pastor of a church, please consider letting me come and speak to your congregation about our needs and the ways you can help. God calls churches to plant other churches, this is a way you can be a part of that calling. While the additional money would be nice, 10 mature adults who can take part in our life, body, church and contribute in service and tithes or offerings would be great.

At Mosaic, we are discussing the vision and mission of Mosaic. Next week we are speaking about the ministry vision for the near future. We want to minister to our area, and in the near future we will be exploring ways to have direct ministry to the community.

The bottom line, I do love and appreciate the opportunity to minister to the folks at The Virtual Pew and I greatly love and am honored to serve Mosaic Church. Mosaic Wichita

Prior to the basic updates, I want to remind everyone, you can visit the web site, www.myspace.com/mosaicwichita to see and hear all of the bands that are coming to the church. We have had various people check out the MySpace page and our regular web page at www.mosaicwichita.org It is nice to know that people are noticing. We have a number of things going on, including the new "Cluck Cluck" ministry. It is amazing at how people in the surrounding areas have supported this concept up to this point. We hope that this little ministry can be something that not only brings us together, but has us helping out those we know in the community who may be doing without.

Here are some upcoming Mosaic Events for the week starting for tonight.

Tonight, Wednesday, March 18, 2009 several things are going on at Mosaic.

Bob Harrell has completed the one sign for the church and he will be there at 6 PM this evening to hang the sign. We will need some help for that and anyone wanting to help with this, please show up.

Also tonight at 6 – 7 PM will be worship practice. Anyone wanting to show up for that should be there promptly, and ready to go at 6 PM or as soon thereafter as possible.

Tonight at 7 PM – 8 PM Bible Study, we will be going through John 5. We have been pretty good with this study, not going over and staying focused. Bring your Bible if you have one, if you don’t we have one available.

For those taking part in the “Cluck Cluck Ministry” (Mary Jane’s Title) please be here to help get things finished up. We will also be setting up criteria for who wants to participate in providing feed, straw, and upkeep needs and initial cost of set up. Also as a part of this will be discussion as to who gets to participate in the initial distribution of eggs, and meat, and how we distribute meat and eggs to the poor.

Friday at 6:30 PM we will have Worship Team Practice and Broken Pieces Small Group. If interested in being a part of the worship experience come on out. We still need a solid Worship Leader who can work with me regarding the vision for Mosaic, this will include a focus on quality and contemporary or innovative worship aspects and techniques.

Sunday, Pot-Luck and Discussion and Decision making as to ministry for the poor and outreach efforts of Mosaic. We will be concluding the initial phase of the Contagious Christian series, prior to going on to teachings on becoming a Contagious Christian and living out your faith. In the meeting on Sunday, we will discuss various ministry options regarding getting ready to become a Contagious Church. We will discuss what specific 1st step we will be taking to get the church ready, and specifically the areas of ministry (2 of them to start) that we will start in order to provide ministry to the community. For those receiving this, note that we have noted the emphasis Jesus placed on ministry to the poor and needy. Jesus spoke over 200 times related to this, and in the Bible it addresses this need over 2,000 times. We want to be a church that follows the mandates of scripture.

Also beware that we will have a special speaker, Kasey Reusser on Sunday March 29. We want everyone to show up to come hear Kasey. He is a good friend and a loyal brother. He also believes in and is very aware of the ministry of Mosaic. Kasey is a Ministerial Student at Word of Life and I personally look forward to hearing him speak.

The following is the current calendar for the church regarding concerts and so forth. We encourage individuals to participate and note, not all concerts are “Christian” concerts. We believe in the concept of seed planting and it has been clear that this ministry has not only been an effective ministry to individuals but to the bands. We have several special needs in particular to some of the concerts to point out so please note those and indicate if you can help with these needs.

We need a place for these guys to stay, and to provide them at least 1 meal, dinner, and possibly 2 meals, including the breakfast. Also invite all you know for this show, we will take up a collection to give the guys for their efforts.

1 – Friday, First Friday, Hip Hop Show with Lippin Off, Opening will be Rap Artist Kingstum $5 www.myspace.com/lippingoff This is another big 1st Friday event, and is not a Christian concert. This will be our first Hip Hop show as we try to reach out to various communities. We need people who can be here to serve, also provide meals, drinks, and basic help such as tickets, concessions. I would even ask that for the 1st Friday events we consider having alternative forms of outreach available during this time.

This all female band is tremendous and has been receiving rave reviews. They are in town for several shows. We are looking for other venues for them to play at and places to stay, and help feeding them while they are here. They will be here for the entire week.

We will be talking more about this on Sunday, and then we will be making the final decision regarding the event. It is an event I believe we can work with various mid-town locations and churches in the area to help out at. We want it to be not only an event for the homeless, but one that provides information as to services, but also provides services such as providing socks, washing and massaging feet or back massages, washing or cutting hair, things of that nature.

Christmas & Movie Needs For Mike And The Virtual Pew

In the past The Virtual Pew has requested funds. We are at the place again that we need your support. It is the end of the year and there are a number of ways you can make a tax deductible contribution to this ministry if you wish. You can do so by either designating your gift to The Virtual Pew as a benevolence gift, or specific gift to assist others or by making a designated contribution to The Virtual Pew through the ministry of Mosaic Church.

Here is the immediate need. As most know I am asking for personal help in regards to being able to visit my mother in Tennessee during Christmas. I am no longer receiving a check from Youth Horizons and while I have provided for my family through December, including Christmas, we did not expect to have to make the trip to Tennessee. I and my family have lived on faith, from month to month for some time; we don’t have extra finances for this. While some have been critical of some of the gifts given to my son, for example he was given 2 years ago a stereo for his car; those are things others have provided. You have been faithful in the past in helping others with needs of this type such as help for my wife to go visit her brother and sister prior to their death from cancer, as well as others who had requested I participate in the funeral of a mother or loved one. Let me explain my immediate need.

My mother has entered in the last month’s stage 4 of cancer. She has cancer in her throat, and lungs and it appears as if the cancer is terminal. My mother and I have never really been close yet she is still the person who gave birth to me, and she has in fact lived a difficult and hard life. I would hope to know the love of a mother for only a brief period of time as opposed to never knowing of this type of relationship in my life. I do not know of my mothers relationship with God but I know that despite the things that were done to me as a child, I have an obligation so show respect and forgive. For those knowing my story in detail, you know how important the concept of forgiveness is. I want my mother to know that I forgive her for the things she did to me as a child. I wanted to visit my mother some months ago, but was not able to do so for various reasons. I won’t go into those as I don’t want anyone to misunderstand my true feelings and intentions towards the reasons I was not able to go.

About two and a half months ago I realized I would be leaving my position at Youth Horizons. About a month ago, I presented to my mother and sister, who is taking care of her now, one of two options. I could leave immediately after my 1st day away from Youth Horizons and come spend a little over 2 weeks or as long as I needed with her, or I could come the first day after my wife and son’s Christmas break from school, December 20 and spend about 10 days with her. My mother chose to have my wife, son and I come visit her during Christmas. My daughter just spent some time with her in November when she took some vacation time with her husband. My daughter, Marathana, will not be going with us during Christmas. We as a family won’t celebrate Christmas until we return from Tennessee.

The reality is, we don’t have the funds to go, but we are going nonetheless. We likely have enough to get there, but will be far stretched to care for ourselves while there, and then come back. We are in need of somewhere between $300 and $500 as a minimum to make this trip. We will be staying at an uncle’s trailer while there; he is currently in South East Asia taking care of some of his family business. This is at minimum of a 2 day drive and there are other ways people can help a place to stay along the way, a place to speak to earn income, those types of things would be of great help. Places either along the way, or way back would include any place in Tennessee along the I 40 corridors between Memphis and Nashville in particular would be of great help. We will be leaving her on the evening of the 19th, likely drive through the night, and returning on December 29 or 30, leaving Johnson City Tennessee, (upper east corner of the state) early in the morning. The drive is approximately 1,100 – 1,250 miles. There is an alternate route we can take that would involve needing some lodging between St Louis MO, to I 57 to I 24 through Kentucky into Nashville Tennessee. Of course we would love to have the opportunity to meet many of the friends of either myself, wife, or The Virtual Pew along the way. We would even love the opportunity to share about our ministry, speak in a church or group of some sort, and even just spend time with friends. Getting to see folks we have been blessed to get to know is also important to us. This would include any along the routes listed above, Western North Carolina and/or South Carolina. Now for clarification the two route options includes 1) from Wichita Kansas to Tulsa, Tulsa to I 40 and then East Through Arkansas, Memphis, Nashville, Tri Cities. The other option 2) would have us going from Wichita to Kansas City, Kansas City to St. Louis, St. Louis to Paducah, Paducah KY to Nashville, Nashville to Tri Cities. We are open to going one way, coming back another depending on the help we get from friends along the way, or possible speaking engagements along the way.

Now please understand there are many ways you can help here, a place to stay, a gift in any amount, prayer and more. I truly value the concept of every gift being of value. There is one other thing you can do to help out if you choose.

While in Johnson City, along the way, and even here in parts of Kansas, I am starting filming of my story The Keystone Kid in the locations where the story took place. This will be done in documentary format using a 2 camera shoot. For everyone who wants to contribute to this cause, any gift in the amount of $50 or more will get you listed in the credits as a contributor. One can take on the Honorary Producer Rights for $5,000. This will help insure that the final product is of best possible quality. It is estimated that the final product will be between 1 hour and 30 minutes and 2 hours in length. I am also seeking music for this production with video rights. I estimate the total cost, including time for this production, will range from $10,000 to $20,000. I could easily spend substantially more for this, but realize that those costs may be prohibitive. For every gift of $50 or more, we will also send a copy of the DVD once it is complete. Filming for this project has already started.

In closing, while I am now a full-time pastor at Mosaic, and with The Virtual Pew, the only guaranteed income is through Mosaic, which is currently $600 a month. There is hope that will go up to $1,000 a month but even then, no housing expenses, I have to pay taxes, travel and more. Think about it, $12,000 a year, plus doing the ministry of The Virtual Pew. It is why the contributions to The Virtual Pew or salary designations through Mosaic are so important. I have never asked for more than I need but have been blessed with what others have given. I want to assure you, that there are still the designated ministries of The Virtual Pew that provide direct services to individuals, whether help with phone bills, help with food, electricity, and so much more. The ongoing support to The Virtual Pew as well as ongoing speaking opportunities at both Christian and non Christian events is also important. One thing I'd like to mention during the time I was sharing on the Pew I was in touch with a Jewish man named Aviad Cohen . He was a young musical artist actually starting to get famous-as you will see on his site. Anyhow he was new in Christ -as you may or may not know many Jews do not recognize Christ as we Christians do. The ministry of the Virtual Pew has helped me tremendously in my walk with the Lord. When I first discovered this group online over a year ago, I was skeptical. An online church seemed a little unorthodox to me. But since I didn't have a home church at the time, I decided to give Mike's group a try. I have not regretted it one day since. The Virtual Pew has challenged me to grow deeper in my faith, to dig into the Bible more than ever before and also to understand that the Church is not a building made with brick or stone, but the Body of Christ loving, supporting and caring for one another. Mike has supported me through various trials and changes in my life and has taught me that sometimes we need to just trust God even when it seems He is far away. Another aspect of the Virtual Pew that keeps me (and I suspect others) coming back is that it is a non-judgmental atmosphere. For the past semester, due to my school schedule, I've had to work every single Sunday morning. The Virtual Pew has provided me with a means to worship were I spend most of my time, and with a ministry that is very down-to-earth.

Like many, a portion of my life includes a good deal of time spent online. I shop, meet friends, and find most of my entertainment online. So, worshiping with others online was a logical step for me.

It was also easy because, although I am a Christian, I have never really felt comfortable in a church. I don't know why really, but I feel a connection with the Virtual Pew. I feel completely comfortable. Mike's messages always seem to hit upon something that I need to hear.

Another thing that has had a big impact is that Mike is not your average minister. He is different. I had always thought that if I was not like every other Christian that there was something wrong with me... maybe this has something to do with my discomfort in church. I tend to be a bit cynical due to experiences with the "church". Then I started reading the blogs from the Virtual Pew. I can see that Mike Furches is a genuine guy with a heart for carrying out the Word and taking it to people in need. His sincerity is evident in his words and is eager to meet people where they are in life and share the Good News of Jesus Christ in a way that reaches hearts of those so hardened by this world. I applaud him for his dedication and love for God. His ministry is real.

I am writing you to let you know how The Virtual Pew as put together by Mike Furches has certainly affected my life.

You see, I am a Goth Writer and music critic. I write music reviews of new albums and band interview questions to propose to various rising acts within the Gothic Rock and Industrial Rock scenes. I’ve been part of this crepuscular scene for the better part of sixteen years and now recently am having my interviews and reviews published internationally. Many people within my subculture find that “Christianity” is a faith based solely on elitist values, judgmental views, and in general are made to feel ostracized and disposable. In short, many are called trash and often never even allowed to enter some churches. Rare though we may be, there are those of us who while residing in and working in the Gothic Rock community who still pursue a faith in Christ. Yet, even then we are considered unsalvageable to the larger Christian culture and community.

Mike’s statement of faith as part of The Virtual Pew is one of acceptance unmatched in the larger Christian community. A rare gem as it were. Where many standing preachers would find reason to berate and belittle prospective members of their congregation on matters of appearance or grooming, Mike conversely opens wide the floodgates to any and all people who are willing to listen regardless of culture or subculture, even finding creative ways to involve outcasts and iconoclasts into the discussion on pop culture. His reviews of Horror Movies I find particularly fascinating as he too also takes the road like me that Horror Movies are not something to be feared but rather are our modern Grimm’s Fairy Tales meant as morality lessons.

I met Mike via myspace while I already had a relationship with my savior and continued to announce myself as a Christian. I have found Mike’s vision to reach out to what many of my other rather bombastic “brothers and sisters” would term unreachable people to be a refreshing sentiment. To know that there are those people still left in the world that see the value in a lost and hurting human heart rather than turn and be disgusted simply by the cut of one’s cloth or the color of their hair, let alone the color of their skin. The Virtual Pew is most certainly a unique outreach to people who otherwise may feel that soapbox preachers, rude comic book tracts, and general ignorance seem to be the normal methods any “Christian” has to express what they can only describe as “love” for their common man. Mike’s definition, my definition, God’s definition, of love is to embrace the value of people. No person, no matter how strange or outcast is ever disposable. There are no “trash people” in God’s eyes or in the message of The Virtual Pew.

The Virtual Pew News #18 The Future and Our Needs

This is an update from Mike Furches and The Virtual Pew to give you the status of our needs for the next year in regards to ministry support. For those unaware, I left employment with Youth Horizons for two primary reasons; one was health, the hours and lack of sleep greatly contributed to the downfall of my health and a doctor’s order that I either quit working at Youth Horizons or be dead in 5 years. The second was the need to direct more time to the needs of Mosaic Church where I am now serving as pastor. Mosaic needs a pastor who can dedicate himself to the needs of the body, especially in the early stages of the church and to the continued needs of its people.

I also realized the need to contribute more to the needs of The Virtual Pew. The Virtual Pew, our ongoing ministry including reviews, helping individuals in need, and more was less effective as a result of the additional time it was taking at Youth Horizons and the changing schedules which was occurring through out the last year.

Here is the bottom line, over the last year we at The Virtual Pew made several commitments we were not able to fullfill. We plan on fulfilling those commitments but need your help. Among these were our wrestling scholarships to individuals involved in the wrestling community. As most of you know this is a community we have had a dramatic impact on over the last several years. However, as a result of scheduling, training and so forth, we were able to give virtual no time to this ministry over the last year. For those involved in the wrestling community you know this to be true as you haven’t seen me around as much. Having to give approximately 50 – 60 hours a week made it difficult to do this, especially when trying to keep up the basic counseling responsibilities of The Virtual Pew and doing the work of a pastor at Mosaic. The radio shows from Hollywood Jesus and The Virtual Pew also took an unexpected back seat due to scheduling difficulties.

Here is the bottom line, year before last, when doing the ministry of The Virtual Pew, I was able to bring in between $17,500 and $20,000 in contributions. As this was my only income, with no benefits you can see this wasn’t much for the work we were doing. I was able to bring this much in though from soliciting help as well as speaking at various locations. This last year however our income was substantially less. Outside of the speaking obligations at Mosaic, speaking at other locations was virtually non existant.

This last year, The Virtual Pew brought in an estimated, $6,000 - $7,000, most all of that early on in the year. I was able to bring in from Youth Horizons $20,000, and from Mosaic, $3,600. The income from Mosaic and The Virtual Pew was not taxed andwill be taxed during tax season. I also received insurance benefits from Youth Horizons which was needed due to various medical conditions which came about during the year.

In the last 6 months for The Virtual Pew I have received approximately $1,000, and of that $300 went to direct ministry, in other words, helping someone else. That is something about The Virtual Pew that people need to realize, much of what we have raised in the past goes to direct ministry which has included things like, wrestling scholarships, benevolence or bill assistance, drug testing kits, meals and more for people who are in need. We want to continue those types of things but will not be able to without your help.

My schedule will now allow me to be involved more with the ministry needs of The Virtual Pew but even more time with Mosaic Church. Mosaic is a new church plant that has within the last 6 months, obtained our own space and is reaching out to individuals who seem to have at one time or another given up on church. One of the things I am going to be doing is working closely with churches from either a past association or church affiliation to try and garnish support both in bodies and in finance over the course of the next few years. In this process we have already started some work and should be receiving some help from the parent church organization. While this is greatly appreciated it is not enough to meet the needs of my family and is still short from what I had available in income over the course of the last year.

If looking at last year’s income, you will see I averaged approximately $2,500 per month. Of that $2,500, approximately $500 went to direct services to help others, and over the course of the last six months the amount coming in was $2,200 per month of which $500 went to contributios leaving a total of $1,700 per month for income. For this income I was working approximately 100 hours per week. With those hours you can easily see how I was sleep deprived and how that would have an impact on my health.

Starting December 1st I will only be working between 50 – 60 hours per week, giving me more time with my family and more time to divide between The Virtual Pew and Mosaic Church. While I am looking forward to less hours and more family time, I am in need of additional income from The Virtual Pew. Presently, from Mosaic, I am receiving $600 per month and this is the only income that I can depend on as support to The Virtual Pew is not consistant. I am hoping the income from Mosaic will soon go to $1,000 per month, but even if that takes place, there is still the need of an additional $500 per month. If you notice, this would still be a $200 reduction from what I received last year, while I could use the extra income, what I need and what I want are two different things. I would naturally like to at some point provide more for my family. I realize the sacrifice needed for ministry work and have made that sacrifice for most of my working life, my children, family and those close to me know that all to well.

Last year there were a number of one time gifts to The Virtual Pew, and some who made several contributions over the course of the year. I am at the point where we need that again but at the level of giving two years ago. Of the $500I need in contributions, $300 of that will go to monthly health insurance and a gym membership which I need in order to get my health under control. Hopefully the gym membership will provide the help I need to lower my medication needs, thus my monthly medical costs.

I could go on regarding the work of The Virtual Pew and Mosaic. I could quote numerous individuals who have been abused, former youth pastors seeking to rekindle their love for Christ, individuals with mental illnesses who need The Virtual Pew, or individuals who have given up on church and rekindled their faith as a result of the work of The Virtual Pew. A lot has taken place and despite the reduction in time to The Virtual Pew, ministry has still taken place.

Mosaic is another story. While I have only been there for the last 6 months, we continue to have visitors and are just now starting community projects with the intent to grow. We are starting our first small group this month, and between movie nights and concerts we are starting to let those in Wichita know about us. We have had a number of visitors familiar with The Virtual Pew and some of those have stuck. I need more time to visit with our members, to help impliment the vision of the church, and provide the services normally needed by a pastor.

I continue to believe there is a great deal of potential for this work, but this work won’t continue without your help. Mosaic and The Virtual Pew need additional income for me to continue in the capacity I have. I believe God will provide that and am hoping you are a part of that. I am more than willing to come to your organization or church to talk about the work of either The Virtual Pew or Mosaic. Just let me know and I will be glad to schedule that opportunity. This next year is one I have to get back on track with regarding my health; your help will allow this to take place. I ask you to pray about the work that is done with so many people either face to face or on line via the internet. There is ministry taking place where individuals are being touched, many of those individuals understand of the needs of this ministry because their lives, or the lives of their friends have been touched. I could again use the testimony from numerous individuals who have stated the value of these two ministries.

In closing, I haven’t mentioned another need but wanted to do so. As most of you know, I have had a strained relationship with my mother for what I believe to be good reason. I have asked God that if possible to provide me the opportunity to try and bring about some resolve and healing between my mother and me. For those that know my story, you know that this in and of itself is a miracle. My mother has cancer in stage 3.5 and progressing and has recently had a stroke. I need to visit her while she is still alive, in fact, I have needed to do so for the last months but have not been able to due to not being able to take time off from Youth Horizons. I need your help in order to do this. I am taking a huge step of faith and going to see her during the Christmas Season. While I am doing this, let me emphasize, this is a huge step of faith as I don’t have the money to do so. I am doing this hoping money will come in in support of this need. I imagine that over the course of the next year I will likely have to make several trips due to her declining health. I could go into a lot more detail but will leave it at that for now. Many have helped on behalf of others in the past, whether for my wife and the death of her brother and sister, or for others needing help through the ministry of The Virtual Pew. This is a time I need some support and frankly don’t know if it will come through or not, but am starting out on the trip in the next 3 weeks, whether I have the finances or not. I know I will be able to get there, I don’t know if I will be able to get back. God will have to provide.

Thanks for praying for and supporting this ministry. Some have likely noticed that more is taking place with The Virtual Pew and Mosaic Church, that is the build up and excitement that has been taking place. It has been over a year since a letter like this came from The Virtual Pew, I hope you understand the need for this one.

The Virtual Pew News #17 / Goodbye Youth Horizons

A little over a year ago I started working for an organization I truly believed in called Youth Horizons. For those familiar with my ministry and the ministry of The Virtual Pew you will know how excited I was about this opportunity. My employment with Youth Horizons would be of benefit in several ways.

One, was it would provide me the opportunity to work with troubled boys in a youth residential situation. I have always loved and cherished the opportunity to work with boys who in reality are not much different than I was growing up. I believed God would, and could use my background to work with these boys in a way they could relate to and in a way that would bless me with the reminder of what God had done for me.

Secondly, my involvement with Youth Horizons would provide an opportunity to work over night three nights a week to get the work of The Virtual Pew done. This would also provide study and prayer time for the pastor position I took at Mosaic Church in Wichita.

The third reason the Youth Horizons job was attractive was it allowed me to bring in a little extra income without asking for contributions to The Virtual Pew so much. This was important as I know many ministries ask for money on a continual basis. I didn’t want The Virtual Pew to be a part of that type of group.

Despite what I was looking forward to regarding employment with Youth Horizons, I found it necessary to resign effective December 1st, 2008. I gave a two month notice but find it appropriate to detail the reasoning and the ongoing needs of The Virtual Pew, and Mosaic Church.

The first thing I need to communicate to you is my health. I am diabetic and prior to my involvement with Youth Horizons was able to manage my diabetes with medication, diet, and exercise. Over the last year however, my health has deteriorated to the point of becoming life threatening. My fasting blood sugars on average where over 300 and my sleep patterns, (or lack of, was causing my cholesterol levels to increase dramatically.)

One of the issues related to my employment at Youth Horizons was I specifically requested to work three nights a week, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday’s. This would allow me to spend time with my family, plus continue additional ministries within the wrestling community I cherished. There was more, I was doing a radio show on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Early on I saw this was not going to work as per agreement, but I didn’t say anything about it.

In the early period of employment at Youth Horizons I discovered I would have to attend various trainings and at times had less than 2 days notice prior to those meetings. I had to cancel speaking engagements, interviews, and officiating wrestling tournaments. It cost me as much as $300 per day in some situations, and a minimum of $125- $150 per day. The minimal salary of $20,000 per year would soon be lessened by the 72 mile round trip, additional meetings, and cancellations of other paying events. Between coverage of some Friday nights, and other nights during the week, I ended up working a minimum of 176 hours in any 4 week span at Youth Horizons, more than I requested upon hire. With this came other issues.

As mentioned earlier, my health began to suffer. Several months ago I scheduled an appointment with my physician, Dr. Tom Kline of Family Medicine East in Wichita. I was experiencing two months of constant, severe headaches. Tom and I began to explore why and as I begin to explain my sleep patterns, and other things related to work, he told me, “Mike if you don’t quit your job at Youth Horizons you will be dead in 5 years.” Tom and I have been close over the years and one of the things I appreciate is his willingness to shoot it straight. With me averaging less than 4 hours of sleep a night, and in some 72 hour periods only getting 4 hours of sleep, I couldn’t regulate my diet, maintain my exercise, and was losing out on needed rest. As a result, I had to go on insulin injections, currently at 4 per day.

Let me make clear, I tried to continue involvement with Youth Horizons. I requested my hours go back to what was agreed upon on hire, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday nights, working a 12 – 14 hour shift to give me the needed 40 hours per week for benefits. I would have continued to stay as I have started feeling better. This was either not considered or allowed to my knowledge. I was told of the agency’s concern for my health. As a result my last day of employment will be November 30 of 2008.

While the residential staff at Youth Horizons has left employment, and another coworker has quit, I would ask you to keep the program in your prayers. They have hired one additional staff and are in the process of interviewing 2 staff for House Parents and another staff to take my place. They have filled the other vacant position in the last few weeks and are training that gentleman.

One of the hopes I had was the work of The Virtual Pew would take place at night. I hoped the income from Youth Horizons would enable me to do more direct ministry with income coming into The Virtual Pew. While there was money coming in from Youth Horizons, the income from The Virtual Pew lessened as a result of not soliciting as much.

In 2008, we estimate The Virtual Pew revenue will be down $12,000. Between lost income from donations, speaking, and officiating, all of the additional hours worked only accounted for $8,000 over the course of the year. When figuring in a 72 mile round trip to work with the rising cost of gasoline, my experience with Youth Horizons was not financially feasible, especially when looking at the effects on my health.

The issues related to Youth Horizons would be hindered more with my accepting the Senior Pastor position at Mosaic Church in Wichita. While this has brought in a small income to help with the loss at The Virtual Pew, it has been small.

Mosaic is a young church with potential. Mosaic has the desire to reach out to those who have given up on church. The ministry of Mosaic and The Virtual Pew are a perfect marriage. Over the last 4-6 months we have had a number of visitors visit Mosaic. Unfortunately, due to the time restrictions, including working Sunday nights plus 3 - 4 other nights a week; I have had little time to visit and do follow up. One of the things I am looking forward to is getting this work for Mosaic done.

Between the commitment to Youth Horizons, Mosaic and The Virtual Pew I have little time to see my family. On average I get to spend less than 4 hours a week with my son, and 8-10 hours with my wife. This was not acceptable. The work of all of these agencies is important. For example, this last Tuesday some of the people associated with Mosaic and several other churches and I met with a young man. I spearheaded the meeting that had a tremendous bearing on this man. He was in a crisis situation where between drugs, sexual issues, and other factors, if immediate and sudden changes were not made, it was possible his life would be in danger. We managed to get this man into another home, away from his job where there were serious issues. He is one of many that need the ministry of The Virtual Pew and Mosaic. I have maintained God’s calling to reach out to people often neglected by the church. I have seen lives saved and lives changed.

I could go on, but let me talk some about the future and some of the needs.

I am excited about getting back into full-swing with The Virtual Pew and Mosaic Church. Not only do they need me, but I need them. This will require several things to take place however; it will require the effort to raise funds for The Virtual Pew. While the income lost from Youth Horizons is a big deal, the medical benefits are an even bigger deal. My family needs at minimum an additional $500 per month to help cover the medical coverage, plus the additional outstanding loss beyond that. It would be great to have more than that to allow the ongoing direct ministry of The Virtual Pew in helping others meet their needs. I will eventually be able to get back on my wife’s insurance coverage, but that will be at least 1 month, and will cost in the neighborhood of $300 per month. The current cost of my medications is $150 per month with insurance. While exercise, better sleep and other factors will lessen the need for some of those medications, I still have an immediate need.

As a part of the work of The Virtual Pew, I will also start booking myself for various engagements, from church related, to business motivational, to also including illusion or magic shows plus raising awareness for Mosaic Church. To schedule something you can email booking@furches.org I have a new booking agent who will work with you to schedule an event. Having an agent to help with this is a tremendous benefit and help. The bottom line regarding The Virtual Pew is that it will start back up full-force, and along with that will hopefully come in much of the previously lost revenues. Please remember, that a large portion of the revenues that come into The Virtual Pew go out to direct services and ministries.

There is additional work with Mosaic which will take place. I will schedule office hours three mornings a week and regular visitation and outreach hours. I will be working at visiting each member of Mosaic plus guests. I will also reach out to the most outcast in the Wichita area: Goths, the homeless, drug addicts, prostitutes and more. I am excited about the opportunities to use my talents, gifts and abilities to their fullest.

There is a lot going on. I didn’t even touch on my mother in East Tennessee recently having a stroke, and the discovery of cancer, currently at stage 3.5. It is estimated that she has approximately 1 year to live. For those that know my story, you know of the strained relationship between my mother and me. You also know of my desire to make amends and discover what it is like to have a mother for at least a small period of time in my life. I am still praying God will provide the finance and means for this to take place. I am planning to spend 2 weeks with my mom in December while at the same time, film a documentary about my life in the area I grew up. For my mom to be in this, with resolve between us would be an incredible blessing. How this will work out, I am not certain. I am just praying about it and seeing where God leads. I would greatly appreciate anyone who could help see to it that this visit occurs. I am taking a step of faith in making the visit prior to having the financial resources for the trip. I don’t have much time left with my mom though, therefore, I am taking a huge step of faith, hoping that there are those who can help make this trip possible.

In closing, I want to make clear; I wanted to make the experience at Youth Horizons work. I love, admire and respect greatly Earnest Alexander of Youth Horizons as well as the other staff there. With my health and the needs of my family, I couldn’t justify the continuation of employment with the agency without some compromise. Youth Horizons and their ministry to troubled youth is a ministry I will continue to support in one way or another. I won’t close the door on maybe one day going back in some capacity if they would have me, but for now, I can’t continue in the capacity I am. The last year has been a difficult one with a lot of learning. It has been a year where I learned, and the things I learned were good. It is a year where I think I had a positive impact on some wonderful boys often misunderstood and for that I will be forever grateful. It has been a year God could open up doors, and improve certain aspects to help make The Virtual Pew, and Mosaic Church into the ministries He wants them to be. I covet your prayers, and appreciate your support, both in promotion and financial. My hope and my prayer, is that God will be glorified, and those seeking spiritual truth, will come to know more about the person of Jesus Christ and have an eternal relationship with the King of Kings as a result of these ministries. Be on the lookout, things are already starting to take place.

Mosaic & The Virtual Pew Update

Greetings,

This is intended as an update for Mosaic and The Virtual Pew. First let’s look at Mosaic.

A lot is going on at Mosaic as we continue to work on the series, Basics of the Faith. Be on the look out in the next 2 months of a effort to start reaching out on a more structured detailed level. I have resigned from Youth Horizons effective December 1 to dedicate myself full-time to Mosaic and The Virtual Pew. Both of these ministries have the same vision and will blend together quite nicely while giving me the time to do the work needed.

As a part of the outreach and ministry of Mosaic, this weekend, on Saturday November 15 we will be hosting the film, Invisible Children at 7 PM. This riveting documentary has been highly acclaimed and addresses serious issues involving war and children. The showing is free and is recommended for Mature Audiences only. There will be refreshments available at the movie.

Also this week we will have church on Sunday where we start at 10:00 AM. This Sunday we will look at Worship as the theme will be Becoming As A Child. There will be a Bible Study on Wednesday at 7 PM and on Friday, November 21 is a concert featuring: Vehicles, Urban John, and The Jeremiah Foundation. The concert will start at 8 PM and there is a suggested donation of $5. We will offer a 3 for 2 admissions that is where 3 people coming together can get in for $10, and if you are having trouble with finance, give what you can afford to get in. This should be a fun time for everyone that attends.

We also need to let everyone know that is a part of Mosaic of a new item on the calendar that is rather important. On Sunday, November 23 we will be having a pot-luck dinner along with a business meeting for the church. We will be looking at better ways to reach out and expand the future of Mosaic. We encourage everyone that is a part of Mosaic to be there, and that we also want you to know, if possible, bring enough food for your family plus 2. That way we can cover meals for everyone in attendance. Of course, as to what to bring, bring whatever you would normally eat, if pork n beans, bring pork n beans, if it is t-bone steak, make sure you put one back for me.

Now as to The Virtual Pew, a lot going on and be on the look out in the next week regarding exciting news with The Virtual Pew and the things that are going on there. One thing that I will mention here is the attempt to use sermons from Mosaic to post in the weekly sermon listings at the web site, http://www.thevirtualpew.com/ Those postings will resemble a cyber church service complete with worship. This last weeks posting is already up and the online sermons have been getting good reviews.

Myself and The Virtual Pew also received international recognition during the elections. Being interviewed by several international media groups including The Daily Telegraph in London and The Canadian Free Press, I was able to talk about the ministry of The Virtual Pew and the role of the religious community in the last United States Election. Those articles and more are available by checking out the postings at The Virtual Pew.

A lot is going on, between The Virtual Pew and Mosaic Church I am blessed to see people touched on a daily basis, whether the abused, the drug addict, the seeker, or the person having terrific financial difficulty, I am honored to see God work.

Now as promised, that calendar for activities at Mosaic, and be on the look out in the next week or two regarding the changes in why I have left Youth Horizons, and what is in store for the future.

The Virtual Pew News #16 Thank You

Well after a crazy few weeks I figure it is time for an update. You will quickly see why it has been a few weeks since I sent something out.

I guess one of the last things people heard about was the request for funds regarding my wife Mary Jane’s need to spend some time with her brother Larry before he died. Larry has cancer, and short of a miracle from God he only has a short time. At the writing of this newsletter Mary Jane will be returning to Kansas from Tennessee tomorrow afternoon. I can’t say thanks enough to those who supported and believed in this ministry enough to provide the needs in getting Mary Jane to Tennessee, plus enough to get her there for the funeral when it occurs. All I can say is God is good! We obtained enough support allow Mary Jane to spend time with her brother, but also to return for the funeral. There is also the possibility that Nathan and I will attend the funeral. I must say, I feel that I made a mistake and if I had things to do over I would do them differently. Nathan and I would have gone on the initial visit to spend time with Larry while he is still alive. I know I don’t always make the best decisions and this is one I would have made differently. That said, we know each of you who provided financial support or prayed for us have been used by God. Our prayer is a blessing from God, and an opportunity for you to experience the fullness of love from God.

There is another reason I have not been as active lately. While hosting a poker night at the house a few weeks ago, we had a number of friends and former church members over; I accidentally ran a wooden skewer from a ka-bob almost through my hand. It didn’t bleed much, didn’t think that much of it after putting on Neosporin and washing it out. That wasn’t enough though. The hand developed a rather serious infection which is just now clearing up. Mary Jane talked me into going to the Doctors and I am glad I did. I would have never thought an infection could hurt that bad, and run the risk of damage it did. The hand is close to 95% better though, and I am soooooo, glad.

I have also been active doing some things with Hollywood Jesus. I was able to watch a couple of screeners. I am working on reviews of a documentary with an interesting twist towards Christian film making, and a wonderful movie that just came out on DVD called Martian Child. I was honored to get to interview 10-year-old child star Bobby Coleman. He starred with John Cuscak in the movie. I will be running the interview and getting the review up this week. For those critical of Hollywood, know that wonderful movies like this encourage and tell the story of adoption, plus the love of a father and child. The interview with Bobby which you can hear by visiting www.blogtalkradio.com/hollywoodjesus is one of the most fun interviews I have ever done. In the interview Bobby brought up his involvement with his church and how much fun church can be.

Things are also continuing at Youth Horizons. I am working three nights a week which is allowing me reading time, devotion time, as well as time to get caught up on things. I am also using this time to interact with friends and individuals using the ministry via personal messengers.

Lastly, over the last weeks I was reminded of the importance of ministry and The Virtual Pew as I got to spend some one on one, face to face time with Curt Nelson. Curt is in the United States Army and recently returned from his time and service in Iraq. Curt and I maintained a regular interaction during his time in Iraq. To be blessed to spend face to face time, even at 3:00 – 5:00 AM was worth it. Curt is a dear brother, and one I expect to keep in touch with. We had an early morning breakfast on his drive back to Texas, and we stood outside in the winter morning temperatures for over an hour talking about everything from dating to family relations. Curt asked if I was going to do a blog on the time together. I told him I would write something, and I think a newsletter mention is a step up from what we spoke about. Hopefully, this a reminder that you are praying for and supporting a ministry that makes a difference, and is hopefully something that reminds you to develop real and lasting relationships with others.

The last weeks have been hectic. Of course there was the controversy that comes with this ministry at times. I challenged Christians to speak truth, alluding to the false email that many have sent around or seen about Barack Obama. Not as an endorsement of Obama, but as an illustration that with all people, even those we disagree with, truth matters. Then I have done a few video presentations, using the television show South Park to show some aspects of spiritual truth, including the language we use. It is amazing how some can find reason to complain, yet most of those very people are doing nothing to develop relationships with, or reach those who have been hurt by the church or for whatever reason not a part of Christianity. Our hope remains to show Christ to people and while there are those who disagree with the methods at times, I challenge that anyone can look at the testimonies of those who have responded, and then from there, argue with the methods that have brought people either to Christ, or to a point where they are willing to hear the message. I am confident; this is a part of what Paul meant in the Bible when he said he has become all things to all people in order that he may win some. Paul never compromised his relationship and obedience to Christ, but found unique ways to reach a culture in their environment.

Truth is, while family members die, hands have injuries, and other difficulties come about, God is still good, all the time! He provides funds when funds are needed, he has doctors in place to help as help is needed, he reaches people most consider unreachable, and he develops relationships and friendships across oceans. One thing is for certain, those who know me, know I speak my heart and speak the truth as I see it and know it. That said, for those who don’t know Christ, I challenge, he is still alive, and still working on this planet. Some of you are helping to assure that, some of you are praying and responding to encourage me and others. To all of you, thank you from the bottom of my heart, God bless you, and know that God is still love and that when we love Him, and love people, we have kept the greatest of all commandments. Thanks for your love, it has touched my family.

A lot has been going on in the last few weeks and I am aware that some think The Virtual Pew has either taken a hiatus or is out of commission. Let me assure you, neither is true, in fact, God has been good and a lot of things are happening that will strengthen The Virtual Pew.

The Golden Compass, One Christians Anti-Protest

This is one of the most controversial articles I have done in some time; well it is at least controversial to some. As many may have heard, The Golden Compass is a movie that is based off the series of books written by Philip Pullman. Pullman, a self professed atheist has written what many consider to be an antagonist piece of fantasy for a child which is an atheistic version of The Chronicles of Narnia. In this series of books, children ultimately find a way to kill their God. Many Christians are up in arms about the movie. While some are warning others about the contents of the movie, others are planning protests. I wrote a response piece to the movie with some research and a challenge to all Christians. I have had hundreds of responses, and so far, only 5 individuals who are upset with the article I wrote. I challenge you to read the article at one of two web sites, as both of them have started garnishing comments from readers. If you have heard the hoopla, seen the emails, or read the article, the perspective I take is one you should also be aware of. This movie opens in December and I am grateful that my response has made its way around the globe. I have heard literally from all around the world with several individuals telling me they are responding to the emails they get about this movie, with this article. My prayer is that God will use it and cause at least Christians to think.

My New Move

As many may or may not know, I no longer live in Derby, Kansas. Many are aware of the issues with my son, and our concerns regarding this community. While we love the community, we wanted a house that would allow us to offer something different not only for our son, but our family. I was in the process of interviewing at various locations around the country and there was a possibility that The Virtual Pew would close down or be greatly changed. I wasn’t sure about what would ultimately happen until just recently, (more about that later.) Long story made short, we are in Clearwater, Kansas, a community just to the south of Wichita. My son has gone from being at a school with 2,500 students to one just under 500 students. A huge change and he is already doing nicely. I love our house, an underground house with acreage. We will have the option to look at buying the house with an option, or a flat out purchase after our lease runs out. Right now I am looking forward to a horse, some chickens and the like. The work of The Virtual Pew will actually continue in the Wichita area and around the globe.

Our Income Concerns

Many of our prayers have been answered regarding income concerns for The Virtual Pew. After my last request I got substantial gifts that allowed us to catch up on areas we were behind, including some salary concerns. The ministry needs the giving to continue. We are at the time of year that giving is critical. Bottom line is it costs to provide this ministry. I am also sending out with this an attached copy of our giving brochure. I challenge you to look at that, read it, and give accordingly.

While I have picked up some additional income and am exploring others to help with the ministry needs, it is simple; we still need your support. One of the things that Lord has provided, if you are faithful in giving, is more direct ministry assistance to others, and the possibility that if the giving would continue as it has over the last year, with a slight increase, we may be able to bring on someone at least part time, plus provide the assistance to others. What types of assistance might you be asking?

Over the last year, my salary from The Virtual Pew was around $10,000, that’s it and that includes officiating wrestling, income from donations, announcing football games and so forth. In other words, I had to do outside work which is still ministry related for that money. As you can tell, this isn’t a large income. We also continued to provide ministry to those in need, drug addicts needing help, the homeless needing assistance, or ministry to the wrestling community, especially youth.

Direct expenditures for The Virtual Pew, just in the last month and a half include:
Computer and office expenses - $150
Direct assistance to those in the wrestling community in need of help from food, to USA Cards, to Scholarships - $450 (Note larger than usual because the start of the season)
Gifts to those in need - $750 (Note on this note, this included approximately 25 people directly, and two of those was early Christmas needs, one lady came to me in tears, thanking me for the reality that her family was now going to have Christmas.)
Additional expenses i.e. auto, etc…, - $275

Again, a larger than usual month for expenses, but I am grateful we had the money to provide the needs. Currently The Virtual Pew has a whopping $4 in our bank account. We have the Christmas season approaching and hope to do more beyond what we have already done to assist others.

Hope for the future

As mentioned above, we need you to continue in your support for The Virtual Pew. I have picked up an additional job with a wonderful ministry that will allow me to do several things, provide better for my family, (note this doesn’t take care of The Virtual Pew Ministry needs) plus learn from a wonderful man and ministry that will make my ministry, the ministry of The Virtual Pew, and the work God wants us to do be more effective. While this job is far below what I have made in the past, it will give some stability, plus benefits which will help. Again, some have told me to be careful about sharing this information because they believe it will keep people from giving in the future. I believe in the ability of The Holy Spirit to do his work. He will inspire those that can, and need to give, to give.

On this subject, I am excited to learn from a well established ministry, with a national appeal. I have already been observing the leader of this ministry and the wonderful man of God he is. I am blessed to be around Christians, and once the training process is over, The Virtual Pew will be back to full force. One of the things I am blessed about is that virtually no time from The Virtual Pew will be lost. In fact, there will be times that while working for this organization; I can do Virtual Pew work, whether that is writing, research, counseling and/or more. As we say in the Church; “God is Good!” “All the Time!” More about this ministry, and the work in the future.

A Thanksgiving Experience

I still just consider myself a regular guy, in fact a poor ol’ dumb street kid saved by a wonderful Savior, Jesus Christ. I am amazed at how when I continue to be faithful in the little things, God continues to be faithful in all of the big things. This month is a wonderful example of that.

I have had wonderful experiences with my family. Yesterday was my 28th wedding anniversary. For those who know Mary Jane, you know of the strongest part of my spirit. I have a wonderful wife who has stood behind this ministry for so many years now. I have two wonderful children, a daughter who has excelled beyond my wildest dreams, a son who has a bright future, and extended family, like a wonderful son in law who celebrates his birthday tomorrow on Thanksgiving. A new hope for continued ministry and the reality of being able to learn from a man I greatly admire. Life is good because God is good. What more could I have? What more could I be thankful for? Well, much more, like the wonderful friends who have supported The Virtual Pew and this ministry over the years. There is a future and there is a hope. A future and hope provided for by the blood of a Savior who was so willing to die on the cross.

I am grateful for those who believe in what we have done, are doing, and will be doing in the future. The internet radio shows, The Virtual Pew Live and HJ Live have already been seeing a good response. As those ministries grow we look at additional ministry directly focused over the course of the next year. I know God has a great deal of blessings in store, not just for us, but those who support us, and especially those who need us.

Thanks for all you have done, thanks for all you are doing, and all you will be doing in the future. The Virtual Pew lives because of you, and because of the fact that God is good, all the time!

The Virtual Pew News #14, Update, Radio, Be in a Movie and More.

I recently did a video tribute to Big Brother 8. I know many have likely seen the television show but I have been pleasantly surprised at the response the tribute video has gotten from various Christian groups, and Big Brother fans. The video is a subtle attempt to simply show people that Jesus loves all people, even people like the Donatos, the family who won Big Brother 8 USA this year. It has been listed on various Big Brother groups around the country, thankfully by many who are Big Brother fans. Stay tuned through the end of the video, it actually has footage and a comment after the credits.

Additional big news is the radio program to air on Wednesday, September 19, at 5 PM EST, 4 PM CST, 3 PM MST, and 2 PM PST. The program will have me discussing Christianity with two Atheists, Dr. Jack Alkon, and Scott Gallan. It will be an attempt for those of faith to learn from Atheists as to why they believe they do. I have already received hundreds of comments and emails about this show which will air nationally at www.blogtalkradio.com/thevirtualpew For those that can’t listen live, you will be able to listen to the archives. The radio program is developing quite nicely with hundreds of listeners each week and the program growing from week to week. Some of the upcoming guests are rather astonishing from Sigmund Brouwer who coauthored the book Fuse of Armageddon with Hank Hanegraaff to Creston Mapes popular top selling Christian author of various books including Full Tilt, and Dark Star. Listen in weekly, and if unable to listen live check out the archives. Currently the archives include filmmakers The Brothers Williamson makers of the upcoming documentary Rebellion of Thought, and Benny Logos of Benny Logos and the Verses talking about his Scripture music.

The Virtual Pew has also started as of recent Daily Bible Verses and A Daily Passage that will assist in people reading through their Bible in a year. We are using the Contemporary English Version for that since so many of our visitors have little or no knowledge of Bible translations. The CEV allows people to read in a style they can understand. So far the response to that from Hollywood Jesus, The Virtual Pew, and MySpace has been very positive. Hopefully as people go through their readings they will be able to ask questions and I along with Pastor Dave and others will try to answer the questions people bring up. I continue to do ministry with individuals and on line. I continue to need bookings to speak in various churches, locations and so forth. Truth is, money is very tight but I keep on keeping on. Without your contributions we can’t continue the ministry we do. From counseling on line to in person, to assisting and helping individuals who are in need of various ministry, whether help with drug addictions, or simply someone who is not currently walking with God. Those needs and requests continue to come in on a daily basis, and without your help, it wouldn’t be possible. As of recent, in the last 3 months, less than $1,000 has come in. Almost $600 of that came from speaking engagements. I still have bills and expenses, and I still need your help. I ask you to look at this as an extension of ministry, even a mission ministry if you will. There is no shortage of need, but I assure you, a shortage of funds unless God’s people are obedient and support ministries like this. Simply put, we need your help, and we need your help now. The Virtual Pew News #13, Time To Step On A Few Toes and The Virtual Pew Live Radio Program

As many have noticed I have sent out regular emails regarding The Virtual Pew but it has been a while since I sent out a newsletter, with that said. Welcome to The Virtual Pew News #13.
Let me be clear right off the bat, we need your financial help. A number of individuals have promised to help, we are grateful, but we really need it. We have not received any contributions from anyone in 8 weeks. We are down to the last $125 between my checking and savings account and The Virtual Pew account. It has been tough but we are plugging along.

I am so grateful for the help we have received but some made promises and we need them to come through. Some have promised a great deal in the area of helping with this ministry, such as advocating on our behalf in church and business circles. For some, those promises occurred almost a year and a half a go, and reoccurred several times. There are even churches we have ministered and given services at that cost us a great deal in driving to and from and taking care of ourselves that never gave any reimbursement despite promising to give. I have for years given services away and will continue to do so, but if you make a promise to help, please follow through. I really believe some need to hear that when they refuse to do what they said they were going to do, at that point, you become exactly the type of church and organization that turn people away from the Gospel and message of Jesus. How can you expect others to respect you, when you do not honor your word? I have to admit, the largest contributor to this ministry in the last year is an Athiest, for those who call themselves a Christian, or follower of Christ, that should be embarrassing. This individual has indicated to me though, the only Christian ministry they give to is The Virtual Pew because they know we do what we say we will do.

Now I know that is blunt and straightforward. There are several in the situation mentioned above, some churches where I saw people get saved, and others dedicate their life to Christ. There are organizations I have promoted and been a part of for years, been honest and straightforward with, yet they have turned their back on those they are called to serve. Many of those know who they are. As I spend hours upon hours, visiting with, and ministering to a family who has a dying family member, having to pay for gas, not being able to eat or feed my family who may be with me at the hospital, I am a firm believer that calling it like it is, is important. For those who have made promises, your empty words have an impact. I want to be careful here, I'm not talking about those who we have been honored to serve, I am talking about those within the church, and within church organizations who have promised help, and not followed through. Of course anyone who has been helped that can contribute and support what we do, to those I say, Thank You!

Now on the flip side, God is good, and I still know He is going to meet our needs. I know some will see this, and find it in their heart and spirit to support our ministry. A ministry still growing, and doing the things we said we would do.

God is good, and continues to provide, it is sometimes though for our family who has made sacrifice. I just found out today, we are going to be able to short sell our house in Oklahoma and a closing date has been set. What does this mean? Our house in Oklahoma, our dream house we saved and planned for, has had a cash offer made on it while it was in foreclosure and a couple has been approved for the sale. While the house is in foreclosure, we won’t owe any more money on it. Unfortunately, we lost all of the investment we had in the house, approximately $30,000 in equity. We are not complaining, we knew when we made a commitment to ministry, we gave our word to do the ministry God caled us to. We also know when losing this type of investment, when seeing your kids do without, and when having those who are Christians break their word and not be honest, it isn’t always easy.

Not being easy don’t mean it isn’t worth it, and I guess that is part of what I would like to leave today. I could be more blunt about some things and have heard a lot lately about how people shouldn’t complain. I agree with, but it is tricky ground, one has to be careful that they don't imply they don’t care. I will openly state, if you are hurting, if things aren’t right, complain to me, let me know how you feel. Why do I say this? Because I care enough about the souls we are honored to serve to want to be there to help and benefit as we can. While some may accept the everything is wonderful even though I broke my leg mentality, this is a ministry where I hope people know we are real, we are real enough to share the good times as well as the times that suck. I believe this is one of the reasons so many contact us and value what we provide. I know this ministry reaches out to those who have been hurt by the church. It has an impact and a desire to help bring people back to a right, open, and honest relationship with Christ. May we be more like Jesus, and less like the version of Christianity that drives so many away, even the organizations that pretend to take on this popular concept of being different than the traditional church.

Now as to some of the things going on. For those that don’t know, we have ventured into an internet radio program. We are testing one more time, Tuesday, August 14 at 4:00 PM Central before starting our regular programming on Wednesday August 15 at 4:00 PM Central. We will be on weekly for 1 hour and will eventually move to additional days as well as the regular 4:00 PM CTZ slot. Plans are in place to eventually start a Hollywood Jesus Program (within the month) and a regular Wrestling Talk With Mike program, within the next month and a half. These programs will have a dramatic impact and will allow us to have an even broader and more effective ministry.

We continue to hear from individuals on a daily basis, we have established additional methods of contact to provide assistance with these individuals. We can now Instant Message with MySpace members, Yahoo Instant Messenger and MSN Instant Messanger. On the Yahoo Instant Messenger we can receive phone calls into our computer, and make phone calls for 1 cent a minute. We also have a long distance service via our land line where we can make unlimited long distance calls within the United States for no additional charge.

The Virtual Pew Live is a on line radio program that individuals from around the world can listen and call into. We can have upwards of 5 people on the line at any given time. If using Skype of Yahoo services calls into the program will cost approximately 1 cent per minute. If using the chat room at The Virtual Pew Live or an IM services those contacts are free. Those services have already provided invaluable to many needing assistance from The Virtual Pew.

The Virtual Pew continues to minister to The Lost, The Last, and The Least, we continue to move forward having a dramatic impact on the lives of many often neglected and forgotten about, we continue to do this despite the financial difficulty we face. We are working to improve that situation, including doing things like this particular newsletter, and putting together a promotional packet, which costs us approximately $150, that we will take to local churches and denominational organizations to get speaking opportunities. Hopefully many doors will open and we can share our story, and the hope offered by Christ.

Regarding the talk radio program. This is a ministry which will be different. While we will play music on occasion, we want first and foremost to be a place where we can minister to those needing ministry. I have already heard from dozens of people who are grateful this program is being offered. One recently asked, how do we do more? My response is, it isn’t so much doing more, as it is doing what we do more effectively so we can minister to more who need it.

In closing, regarding the program The Virtual Pew Live, we need guests, and we need music with permission to use for bumper and programming. Copyright issues are important so beware of that. We also need better production material. I am really in need of an additional $150 for the phone which would give us a higher quality. I have downloaded some studio software but need better, we will get by with what we have for now. We need guests, and you don’t have to be famous to be a guest, although that don’t hurt. We just want guests who understand what The Virtual Pew is all about, and can share their stories. We simply want to touch people and help them understand that Christ loves them. If you can help share that in a non threatening and loving way, we would love to have you on our program. Of course being interested in the things we do whether agreeing or not would also make interesting programming. It doesn't end there though, I am going to be discussing with a few atheists friends of mine about being on the program.

Please, as a closing note, don’t take this newsletter wrong. I don’t want it to sound like a complaining, upset newsletter. But truth is, if those saying they were going to help, who are Christian, had done what they said they would do, there wouldn’t be a need for this newsletter. I continue to ask, for those that can, we need your support. For those that can’t I understand, I want people to know, this ministry is available whether you can donate or not. I really want it to be like a Pauline ministry, I am open to speaking, sharing, or whatever to get funds to help this ministry along. I thrive at and enjoy those opportunities, many have come through and it is appreciated. I firmly believe that what we do for the dollar is hardly matched by any ministry around. Then again, maybe I am just passionate about what we do, and know from talking to the people I have that we have had a positive impact on the lives of so many.

The Virtual Pew News #12 A Note From Mary Jane

Hi! My name is Mary Jane Furches and I am the wife of Virtual Pew’s Mike Furches. I don’t get on and write often, but I do keep up with all that is going on with The Virtual Pew ministry. As a matter of fact, I have been more involved this summer in trying to get Mike booked into various places to speak and share. I am the “behind the scenes” person so to speak.

I am writing this letter to give you a report and up-date of The Virtual Pew’s ministry and fill you in on some of the needs we have. If you have been actively involved in reading Mike’s daily blogs and participating in discussions, you should know that Mike does not solicit support often. As a matter of fact, it is something he really doesn’t like to do. That’s why I am the one writing this letter, at my own suggestion, may I add.

The Virtual Pew is continually ministering to people from all walks of life. Mike stays busy writing daily blogs, responding to messages he receives, and answering questions people have. For example, just the other day he was exchanging messages with one of our soldiers in Iraq while they were under attack! The following are some responses he received just yesterday after people read his blog.

“Can I tell you something? I am sometimes afraid to put my beliefs out there...afraid of being judged...and my friend Darinda aka In turth there is Love...she said whatever God puts on your heart is what he wants us to do and not to be ashamed of what we believe or of him before no man...so I go ahead and allow him to lead me and I want to thank you for "getting me" and what I am saying on your blog!"

“I hope you know that you are not alone -- there are others of us that believe as you do. For a long time, I thought I was a "freak of nature" because my beliefs, my personal knowledge, of God didn't jive with what I was being told in my local church. It's because of what I was told and how I was treated for being "unique" that led to my disdain for modern organized religion. Church folks didn't want "individuals", they wanted "clones". That's why I think that your Virtual Pew ministry is so important -- there's others like me and you."

Sometimes ministry moves from the computer to phone conversations. Mike has spoken on several occasions with people contemplating suicide. Through his counseling, they did not follow-through with those feelings. Other conversations may center on family problems and relationships. It’s really amazing how God is using technology to reach people and even more is the fact that many times the daily blog reaches someone for whom that little message is just what they needed!

The bottom line is that this ministry needs some financial support to keep it going. Mike and I do not like having to ask for monetary support, but there comes a time when we really need it to keep this ministry going. Some of the expenses we have monthly are the internet bill, which is $34.95 and our phone bill. We did switch to unlimited long distance on our land-based phone because Mike’s cell phone is pre-paid card and all the calls he was receiving out-weighed the number of minutes available. When we did the figuring, it was cheaper to go unlimited long distance, which also helps with trying to get bookings. This increased our phone bill by $25.00 more monthly. He will still keep the cell for emergencies when he is on the road. He has been invited to speak at the Mennonite Church USA National Convention in San Jose, CA on July 6. While there is no monetary compensation for this trip, he is hoping to make valuable contacts for future speaking engagements. We are hoping that we can “break even” on this trip next week. He also has a web page which is being designed and will be completed in the near future and that cost will be a minimum of $200.00. There was also recently $300 which was provided to needy wrestlers in the form of Wrestling Scholarships and help provided others who have various needs at times. This ministry is Mike’s main source of income. Every penny that comes in to The Virtual Pew goes into this ministry and his support.

We would appreciate any financial support you could send and would enjoy opportunities for ministry in your area. Mike is not limited to speaking in churches. He speaks in various other venues: prisons, jails, rescue missions, homeless shelters, local mental health associations, drug rehab centers, and others as well as being a motivational speaker at corporations and conferences. While living in Tulsa, he was the #1 speaker for the United Way fundraising campaign.

I am writing this brief letter to let you know I am currently booking presentation dates. I am also attaching brochures that describe the ministry I have been a part of over the last few years. I could go into a lot of detail but thought it best to include some quotes from places I have ministered at in the past. To be brief, God has blessed me to have contributed to three books, been interviewed in such publications as Christianity Today, published in various many other magazines as well as appearing on national television and radio programs. Hopefully my passion and love for Jesus Christ, as well as my commitment to serving others comes across. I am certain that with a little research you will see that the ministry I do is unique.

The Virtual Pew News #11 Goodbye House, Hello Ministry

A lot has been going on as of late and I thought it about time for another newsletter from The Virtual Pew. This one will be a little more personal than some in the past.

First off, a lot in the area of ministry has been going on. Over the last three days for example ministry has included the following:

Daily contact to no less than 10 people with ministry needs. Just yesterday for example here is a listing of what I did.

I responded to 20 emails requesting specific areas of ministry, ranging from an abusive marriage, to an individual who recently went through a divorce and is being criticized by a church and minister. One of the spouses in this family was involved in pornography. I actually get around 2 requests for advice a day from someone where pornography has been an issue.

I also responded to two individuals who are not Christians, who have been hurt by Christianity, and at the same time, while they have been outspoken against Christianity in the past, as a result of the ministry with The Virtual Pew, they are now at the place where they are considering Christianity as an option.

I started and managed the new group at MySpace, The Virtual Pew. This group, in less than a week is now approaching 400 members and has daily posts and comments that are ranging from discussion on Homosexuality to The Appropriateness of Pro Wrestling. This group is still growing and it has amazed me at the ministry and responses I have seen both posted on the forum, and those sent directly to me. I also worked locally with a family having some serious marital issues. I don’t know where the church is when people need it sometimes. People who are supposed to care but let individuals, marriages, and children fall through the cracks. What is so bad in this situation, is that after seeking help from others involved in the church. This couple finally turned to me. I am doing what I can, but it is difficult, it is difficult because the family has apparently already separated and contacting them is not easy. I will try again today to do what I can. I continue to wonder what could have been done if those contacted early on had actually responded to this couples cry for help.

I finally had business cards made yesterday. I know it seems like a little thing but I assure you, something I have been having to find time for, for some time.

I posted the article, I Found Jesus At The Taco Bell, regarding an experience I had after church on Sunday. It is amazing at how God gives me stories. I think he gives us all stories, it is just that some of us have to open up our ears and listen. That particular story had thousands of hits yesterday. I received email from Africa, London, and hundreds of responses in the states. It was the 9th most viewed blog in the Religion and Philosophy category at MySpace yesterday out of hundreds if not thousands of blogs.

You think the day was busy? All of the above happened pretty much in the afternoon as the morning was busy spent on two other areas. First I was online speaking with a dear friend serving our Country in Iraq. I won’t go into any more detail here than to say he stated to me yesterday that yesterday was the first time he was able to express some of the issues he is dealing with. I will tell you, if you aren’t praying for our young men and women serving our country, you should.

That wasn’t my only interaction with soldiers in Iraq though. Another dear friend contacted me regarding some serious issues that had occurred at home. The issues are so serious that he is getting an emergency return to the United States and will be home within hopefully the next 4 or 5 days. I will say it is serious, and between being on the phone with him, and interacting with local authorities I was reminded in a special way that my morning was a morning where the Iraq war was having a dramatic impact on my day because of the association I and The Virtual Pew has with numerous soldiers in Iraq. Truth is, for both of these individuals, there are no services state side to help with their issues. I know that if there are issues like this for these two soldiers, there are likely thousands more who don’t have the help they need.

That was the day just yesterday, a couple of things that normally are addressed weren’t addressed yesterday. I normally have daily interactions where I am offering help to individuals having issues due to drug usage or abuse. Neither did I have any financial issues addressed from folks. Normally these are daily occurrences, but were silent from yesterdays activities.

Now a report on finances; I have good news and bad news and at the discouragement of some I am mentioning it anyway. Last month, April, we met our monthly financial needs. So far this month, and in fact the last 3 weeks we have had no income or donations come in. There is always that concern, but always the knowledge that God will speak to the hearts of some to help meet the needs of this ministry. Last month it was a church who realized the positive things this ministry is providing and they made a donation to help meet the needs for the month. Between that and the donations of around 10 others we were able to get the needs met. Of course that don’t mean the needs will be met for the next few months so I again, ask you to prayerfully consider ways you can support this ministry.

Upcoming activities:

A lot of things are going on. I just announced this morning that The Virtual Pew, as a part of the ministry we have to the wrestling community will be making 3 scholarships available for needy wrestlers within the Kansas Wrestling community. Those individual applicants will turn in essays describing their need, as well as the benefits they believe comes from being involved in the sport of wrestling. An independent group of judges will determine the winners of this. We will provide scholarships for summer wrestling activities to persons in need in the amounts of $150, $100, and $50.

I am also planning on doing a presentation this week at a festival in Wichita called Posipalooza. This event held at the College Hill United Methodist Church at 2930, E. Fisrt Street will feature speaking presentations and music. I will be speaking in the morning on Faith In Film, Using Culture to Discover Spiritual Truths from 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM. I will then assist my wife Mary Jane and Son In Law, Brett Prothro in performing a concert at approximately 12:00 PM. We will perform for approximately 30 minutes. Then that night I will be conducting a Faith In Film Group here at the house.

We have started a Faith In Film Group that is meeting 2-3 times monthly. In this group we are discussing various themes involving the arts. This week we look at our first feature length film, a documentary, The Yellow Brick Road. The meetings have been lasting approximately 3 hours, start at 6:00 PM and this weekend we will be having a cookout. Those coming and wanting to eat will need to bring their own food, and we will do a pot-luck style of meal. We have had as few as 3 and as many as 12 at these meetings. We continue to pray that God will use them and they will grow. So far the response has been great. For those living in the the Wichita area the address is 400 S. Georgie Avenue, Derby Kansas, directly off of Highway 15, behind the bowling alley, at the corner of Sunnydale and Georgie Avenue.

I am also scheduling my summer speaking tour. I will be speaking at The Mennonite Church USA International Conference in early July in San Jose California. I am scheduling speaking engagements on the west coast and California for the last week of June, first week of July. I will also be speaking in the Midwest and Northern Plains for the remainder of July. I am looking at August at trying to hit up some ministry locations in the Southeast or other areas. I am really praying at this point about doing some on hands ministry during this time. Anyone wanting or desiring something of this sort, or living in one of the above areas who is willing to help find locations of ministry, please contact me. I am also planning on spending 2 weeks this year at the Walnut Valley Music Festival in Winfield Kansas. Last year was so effective and the response has been so positive that we are going to try and be there for a longer period of time this year. This is also a time where I receive some strength and refreshment.

Now on a personal level:

We don’t know for certain, but it looks like we are certainly loosing our house in Oklahoma. How we are loosing it we don’t know. To say the least we are heartbroken over this, the primary problem if you can call it a problem, is that we were forgiving of several “Christians” who lived in the house and did not pay the rent. In fact, over the last three years that amount came out to costing us around $10,000. We simply got too far behind on our payments, even with the help from our former church. We have been blessed for the last 9 months to have a wonderful family living in the house who has paid their rent on time every month. They are interested in buying the house and we are trying to do a fast track sell to this family. We sent out the paperwork yesterday, but will have to send a sale contract to them within 2 days. We either have to have the loan assumed by this family, or pay $4,300 by the 15th of this month, and then pay $1,300 a month thereafter for approximately 1 year when the mortgage payment will go back down. We currently rent the house for $830 a month. While we could afford a monthly payment of $1030 a month, as long as we have good renters, we can’t afford the $1,300 a month, and frankly only have about $1,200 of the $4,300. The house is appraised right at $120,000 and our buy out is $98,000. To be honest, it don’t look good on saving the house, our prayer is that if we can’t save it, that our current renters will be approved to assume the loan. We trust God, and know God will continue to take care of us, but sometimes it is hard.

Also on a personal note, we have been having some issues at home. I won’t go much into that other than to ask your prayers. Bottom line our son was wrongfully accused of some things this last school year. He did one stupid thing, we know, but after he was accused of that one thing, he became a target for two other areas. I know for a fact that on those the school was wrong as I was with him when another student gave him a gift. It was later determined that gift was stolen, my son didn’t know it and within 24 hours of finding out it was stolen he was returning it to the school. I won’t go into any more detail other than to say he was suspended for 15 days from school. Again, I was present during the one event, and after seeking legal counsel, we know our son didn’t do anything wrong, but was still punished. Those 15 days and other factors added to some serious stress in our home. It is likely our son will have to go to summer school as a result of the activity and punishment. There are other factors there that have affected our family, bottom line though, it hasn’t been easy. We had a long sit down the other night and spoke about the importance of staying in the Word, staying in prayer, and seeking fellowship with other Christians. I am again playing in the worship band at church, and am encouraging Mary Jane to become active in a women’s Bible study in the area. Nathan is attending Youth Group on Wednesday nights and we have started the process. I have also made the commitment that I will work harder to make sure that work stops at 5:00 and that the remainder of the day is family time and we do things together.

Well that is a lot of what has been happening since the last newsletter. There is no doubt that God is using The Virtual Pew. There is no doubt that needed ministry is taking place. There is no doubt that without The Virtual Pew, there are people who would be struggling more than you and/or I would ever know. For those who have supported us and this ministry in the past, thanks you have no idea how much we appreciate all of your love, for those who haven’t that is okay, but stay in prayer as to when you can or if you should.

The last month has been busy and active. A lot could be said but for those that didn’t know, The Wichita Eagle did an extensive story on The Virtual Pew which garnished a lot of recognition and response. To see that story here:

Pastor Mike Furches wants to help make better followers of Christ by using the power of the Internet. Furches, of Derby, is pastor of an online church called The Virtual Pew, found at www.thevirtualpew.com. There, people can participate in faith-based forum discussions, download MP3 files to listen to Furches' weekly sermons and chat with people about spirituality. He said the Web site attracts about 55,000 visitors each week.

Furches launched The Virtual Pew, which is not affiliated with a church or a denomination, last May. He said he was seeking to reach people and talk about spirituality on a stage where thousands of people build relationships daily -- the Internet.

"I don't know any other way to explain it," he said, "but I felt in my heart that God was saying, 'there's people that need this type of ministry.' "

A mission to reach out

Furches said the mission of the Web site, launched about a year ago, is twofold:

One, it serves as a private and nonintimidating way to reach people who are disconnected with church, he said.

Two, it helps people grow in their faith and spirituality by giving them a popular way to connect with others -- on the Web.

What The Virtual Pew is not meant to be -- and Furches said he makes this clear to those who visit the site -- is a replacement for people's churches.

"The truth of it is, for some, it is," he said.

"But the intent is to, for those who can, plug them back into a community church."

Before launching the online church, Furches served for more than four years as pastor of a southwest Wichita church, United at the Cross.

He said the church was small -- it had about 65 members -- and closed last year, primarily due to financial reasons.

"To me, the bottom line is with small inner-city churches, it's really tough to make it financially," he said.

While Furches enjoyed interacting with the church members and preaching, he did not see himself fitting the role of a "traditional pastor."

"Traditional pastors, contemporary pastors are more administrators than they are pastors," he said.

So he wanted to focus on a different type of ministry.

Furches has a strong interest in the Internet. Since the mid-1990s, he's reviewed movies for an online site, hollywoodjesus.com, a Web site that examines pop culture from a spiritual perspective.

'A source of fellowship'

Kelly DeBardelaben came to know Furches through his reviews on hollywoodjesus.com. After learning about his online church, she began to visit it regularly.

Through The Virtual Pew, she has made many friends whom she communicates with about religion and other issues.

"I look for the same things at The Virtual Pew as I do in my physical church," said DeBardelaben, who lives in Colorado Springs.

"It's a source of fellowship. I just see it as another tool for fellowship and getting to know people and getting to know God."

Colby Reddin, a regular visitor of The Virtual Pew, said it's Furches' messages that keep him coming back to the Web site.

"I like how Mike uses his own personal experiences and past experiences to help enlighten people as to what Christians should do and how Christians should live," he said.

A ministry, not business

Nationwide, there are about 200 Web sites similar to The Virtual Pew, according to Pastor Dick Helms of the Wellsville, N.Y.-based ChristRing Ministries.

ChristRing has an online missions church, Cyber-Church.com, which Helms called the oldest online ministry in the United States.

Helms said such online churches are experiencing slow growth.

"There for a while, there were an awful lot of them out there," he said. But many sites have gone away, he said.

"People think they're going to make money on it, and they find out they're not going to," Helms said. "You're not going to make money, so it's got to be a ministry."

That's exactly what Furches is calling his Web site.

"The way I'm made up," he said, "I knew that God had called me to something different, more of an individual ministry."

And he said he's not in it to make money.

The budget calls for him to make $300 a week. There are links on the Web site where people can contribute financially. But usually, he said, any money that comes in is paid out for bills and to help others seeking assistance.

The Virtual Pew does not have nonprofit status, as churches do. Furches said that's because he wants to be able to speak out on government issues without concerns about whether he is violating the nonprofit status.

Furches said his wife, Mary Jane, who works as a middle school teacher in Derby, is the main financial supporter for the family.

An uncertain future

Comparing his pastoral experiences at a physical church vs. the online church, Furches said there is little that he misses.

"I miss the weekly discipline of having to prepare something different to speak, I enjoy speaking," he said. "that's about the only thing I miss."

He said he still interacts frequently with people from his church in Wichita. He still gets to counsel people and talk with people face-to-face.

But he's convinced that many relationships are made today through the Internet. He's convinced that offering a spiritual tool such as The Virtual Pew can help bring people back to the church.

His goal is to build the online church over the next three years to where he can have two full-time staff positions and a part-time position.

But he admits he's not sure what will happen.

"How big we get, what we do? I don't look that far ahead," he said. "What I would hope is we can get to a place where we can touch a soul."

A Big Thank You

I must also send out a big thank you to those supporting The Virtual Pew over the last month. There was an unexpected cost of attending and speaking at a funeral some distance from Wichita. I made it known that funds were low and that we needed help in order to be of service at this funeral. Within 3 hours $300 came in and those gifts made it possible to attend this funeral and be of service to this family. Thank you for your support. For those that don’t know this ministry is entirely dependant on gifts from individuals and assistance that comes in via speaking or writing ministry. All support is appreciated and needed. I draw at most a salary of $300 per week as mentioned in the article, truth be known, it has been several months since that amount has come in. For example, so far this month, my salary has only been $480 for the entire month. You don’t have to be great in math to realize that don’t come out to $300 per week.

The Virtual Pew Face To Face With Faith in Film

This week is an exciting time for me and for those in the Wichita area who have expressed some interest in The Virtual Pew. This week, starting March 31 we are going to be starting a Faith in Film series.

The Faith in Film series will meet between 2 and 3 times each month and will operate in a small group format. We will gather together in homes to start, and then take part in discussing and looking at how we can identify faith and spiritual issues in contemporary culture. The Bible says in Mark 4:33, 34, “He never taught them anything without first telling them stories.” The following is information that can be used for the Faith in Film Series. You can also contact me to obtain a flyer print out for the series.

What Is The Faith In Film Series? It is a Small Group with a focus on discussing spiritual truths that exist in the arts, not just film. We realize all truth comes from God and God’s truths are often spoken about in culture. Jesus used parables to teach spiritual truths. The Bible states, “He never taught them anything without first telling them stories.” Mark 4:33, 34. Movies, books, television, and music are the most popular form of storytelling today; using these media we will look for ways to deepen our faith as well as finding ways to share spiritual truths with the unchurched.

Your Facilitator: Mike Furches has been using the arts to share culturally relevant truths with those in the church, and unchurched for over 15 years. Recognized as one of the leaders across the country in this field he is adequately prepared to present this in a small group setting. Mike currently writes for one of the most visited review web sites in the world, Hollywood Jesus. He also facilitates and operates an online community of faith called The Virtual Pew.

What will we do? We will watch all kinds of movies, television shows, and listen to all kinds of music. The focus will be on popular arts within the non Christian sector. Some of these will be ‘R’ Rated and will include discussion while at times looking at adult themes.

Who can come? Anyone and everyone that is age appropriate. This is a great opportunity to invite unchurched friends or those who are open to these types of themes. Small children should not attend for obvious reasons. Media that has more of an adult theme will be announced in advance.

We will watch the program and then discuss Spiritual Themes

Anyone wanting to donate to help with the costs of the Faith in Film series is welcome to do so. With the costs of refreshments, DVD’s and so forth there is some costs involved. Of course anyone is welcome to come but space is limited. As the group grows we will look for additional venues to host the event. We do expect that some of the Spring and Summer events to be hosted outside and shown via projection units to accommodate the group.

This group is being held in conjunction with small group activities with Mosaic Church but anyone and everyone is welcome.

While discussion is encouraged the week after the viewing of the Faith in Film series showing, discussion can take place at anytime thereafter on the particular showing.

This Just In, Many know of our support for the ministry in Lahore Pakistan. I just spoke with Minister Boby today and his brother Naveed is struggeling with cancer. Naveed is 22 years old and has been sick since 2002. He is now at home in a great deal of pain and the financial struggles for the family continues to mount. Anyone wanting to help in prayer and/or financial with this family is encouraged to do so.

Greetings! Things have been hectic as of the last month with The Virtual Pew. From raising eyebrows, to challenging Christians to grow in their faith we continue to move forward. The last month hasn't been without some controversy. It is one of the things that keep this ministry unique and effective. We don’t approach our faith in the same mold as "
"traditional" or "typical" Christianity. While our belief in the fundamentals is strong, our desire to be effective is just as strong. As a result we do things somewhat different than most ministries. We seek to reach those who are burned out with the church, for whatever reason, and reach those who are not followers of Jesus in unique and different ways. The last month is an illustration of the effectiveness we can have.

We hit December hard with almost daily blogs and research, finding unique ways to get people to think about their faith or lack of faith. Those efforts were very effective as the traffic to the various web sites grew to some good numbers and have maintained. The Virtual Pew has a presence on several web sites including, http://www.hollywoodjesus.com/, http://www.thevirtualpew.com/, http://www.youtube.com/, and of course http://www.myspace.com/. Between all four of those web sites, with direct hits to The Virtual Pew related items, we averaged 137,000 hits a week. Since December 1 to today's date, February 5, 2007, we have had approximately 1,365,000 hits. The Virtual Pew is continuing to make a difference.

The Virtual Pew has also gone through some major adjustments over the last month. The most noticeable is the addition of Pastor David Jenkins. Dave is known on MySpace as well as his other ministry as Pastor Dave. While he will be making an adjustment to the style of The Virtual Pew, he is a mild mannered, very loving individual who will make the effort to get to know the posters at The Virtual Pew message boards. It will allow me more time to spend on other things, as well as continue my ministry at the message boards. In fact the work is growing so much that I really needed someone to help out. I ask your prayers for him, as well as his adjustments to the stylistic approaches of The Virtual Pew. For now Dave is offering up prayer for individual members of the board and assisting in the sermon topics. He and I are also interacting regarding the needs individuals bring us. This way two of us praying over various aspects of ministry needs and we can better serve those seeking help from The Virtual Pew. Just today, we have interacted regarding some issues at a church, and another individual needing prayer. The Virtual Pew has daily needs of this type coming in.

The Virtual Pew has also seen some controversy since the last newsletter. I wrote a piece in the form of figurative speech regarding sin. It was done as a press release and approached the issues of sin from an allegorical perspective. Some thought the press release was legit, but it wasn't. Hopefully not too many were too upset by that approach. I will say, we received many, many responses from people who felt touched by the post. Comments like it being a reminder of how we are all people who do wrong. Thankfully, there were many who were challenged by that message.

The Virtual Pew also saw some controversy with the posting of An Inconvenien t Truth About 24. click here. This posting looked at the political system and how the populace is often dooped into believing untruths. Both political parties are guilty of this, and examples were given in the article. At least two Christians took offense at the posting, thankfully, many hundreds of others via email and posting replies let us know how much they appreciated the comments. I am thankful that individuals like Becky Garrison, author and editor of The Wittenberg Door chimed in. The truth is our faith must be in Christ, not political systems. How unfortunate that many have misplaced their faith and made their political parties the voice of God.

We have also continued in what I call pre-evangelistic roles in ministry since the last issue. The most recent venture into this area was an interview with Billy Bob Thornton the actor. That interview is currently posted at The Virtual Pew MySpace account, and will be at the Hollywood Jesus account once some server issues are corrected. On a side note, giving for the month of December was the best it has been in some time. We received gifts in excess of $1,000. Of that $400 was designated for The Virtual Pew’s wrestling related ministry. This was a nice contribution that will help in the lives of some underprivileged wrestlers. Since that time, giving has been substantially down, only receiving in the neighborhood of $300 for January, and so far in February, we have received approximately $300. Of course some of this comes from involvement with wrestling, via officiating, and other funds come in via contributions. We appreciate all of the gifts, and they help sustain the ministry needs.

I want to remind folks, they can become a part of the message boards at The Virtual Pew, or visit the ongoing blogs and articles. We do more than that though. There is the continued help and counseling to individuals as they need it. That continues as much as ever. We still need some help on various things. Including, message board moderators, individuals who can help with ministry like worship, computer assistance, help with cleaning up our message boards, we have been getting hit hard by porno spam bots at our web site. I take approximately 30 minutes every day deleting accounts, and deleting posts. I know we need help here, and believe me, I have done all I can to prevent this spamming from these types of accounts. There are other things people can do though. If interested in helping out, let me know. Our ministry is continuing to grow, and I just can't do it on my own.

The Virtual Pew is also exploring the possibility of starting a small Bible Study Group, or Home Church group in the Wichita area. We have several people in the Wichita area who have expressed an interest in this ministry, some from the old United at the Cross, and others who have become aware of The Virtual Pew through various means. I already have several people who have committed to be a part of this ministry if and when it starts. Be in prayer about this. The Virtual Pew desires to provide opportunities to build a community of faith, not just on the web, but also locally. We have made many referrals to churches across the globe; it is nice to know we are finally at the place in the Wichita area that we may be able to move forward.

A lot is happening, a lot is going on. We can't do it without you, and the truth is, we are all a part of the fruit and lives that God is changing. Don't sit back and wait for God to do something, come on board and be a part of what God is already doing for the drug addicts, prostitutes, gang members, wrestling fans, movie buffs and virtually every other sector of life.

Virtual Pew News # 8 A Christmas Gift for You

This issue of The Virtual Pew News will be much shorter than usual. It will be shorter because I value your time during this busy time of year. I could say much about the happenings at The Virtual Pew, but will leave that for the future. I will say, the ministry and the effectiveness continue. The ministry continues as does the needs of this ministry. I continue to hear from individuals ranging from the non religious to pastors as to the impact this ministry is having. I know because of first hand experience with those receiving ministry. I also know our needs continue on in a greater way than ever before.

This issue is about giving back, giving back in such a way that shows to some extent the ministry of The Virtual Pew. This issue will also give back by providing you links that will help you reach out to your friends, family, coworkers and others with the message of Jesus Christ. This issue is unique, yet it has also proven to be effective in the work we are doing.

Since the first of December, I have been doing daily blogs that provides a brief, nonconfrontive devotional along with numerous videos. These are on various themes and all of the videos have a Christmas season focus. From Walt Disney to the Trans Siberian Orchestra, videos from YouTube have been used in these postings that have as of now been seen by hundreds of thousands on both MySpace and The Virtual Pew Blog sites.

There has also been the ongoing interaction with numerous individuals including interactions such as, a family with serious issues where divorce, and suicide prevention has been needed, troops in Iraq, and individuals struggling with alcoholism, and Christians facing issues of isolation from churches. We are still dealing with the real life, difficult situations that many face.

Prior to going on to the postings just an update to let you know that I am also providing the link to the previous newsletter which gave some giving updates for The Virtual Pew. Those giving needs are still present and while some has given to help provide gifts for others, we still have many others to provide assistance to. This weekend I am going to be distributing some clothes to the homeless in the Wichita area, and we have had money designated for the wrestling ministry we are involved in. Finances also took a hit as two paying jobs canceled this month, one wrestling related and another speaking related. Those things make it difficult, but we continue on.

One addition will be the addition of advertisements on the pages. We continue to seek ways to bring in additional funds so are trying the google addsense pages.

I ask you to read through this entire newsletter. This particular newsletter will follow a little different format than usual and we will be back to the regular newsletter in the next week, of course the giving information will be included in those newsletters. I also ask you to prayerfully consider the value of The Virtual Pew this month as you read about the ministry support we are seeking. I ask you to then; if you have questions email or call me. I am also including for those receiving this information via email two attachments. One of a brochure describing The Virtual Pew that can be used to give to individuals you know who are either not in church, or are looking for spiritual answers. Many who have been hurt by the church and/or Christians have received unique value in The Virtual Pew and we have been able to refer many to local churches after some work. The other brochure is one you can give to individuals in your church, or even your church that describes the ministries at The Virtual Pew they can support via, volunteerism, prayer, and financially. This also includes some basic information on how to book me into your congregation and the variety of topics I can present on that is relevant to the ministry of The Virtual Pew. As we approach the Christmas Season I find myself troubled more than usual. I am reminded of my own childhood and the Christmases I observed. Truth is Christmas while growing up was not a memorable or enjoyable event. Gifts and happy memories were few and far between. Oh, there were on rare occasion’s happy memories and enjoyable gifts, but not often. I think it is for that reason that as I have become an adult Christmas has been so enjoyable due to the love of giving I have. I knew my family would enjoy Christmas and it has always been more about giving than receiving. I can honestly say my wife, children, and others I have come to know over the years have enjoyed this wonderful season in ways that have given me pleasure as a result of my ability to give.

As an adult I have had a few rough seasons but God has always come through. This season has been tough. The closest thing I can recall is my first year after leaving Crossroads Clubhouse in Tulsa and going into the ministry full-time. I had put money back to live on for about a year and a half, that is before 9/11/01 hit and I lost over one half of my investments in the crash that came to the stock and bond market. I didn’t know how I was going to celebrate Christmas that year. I was driving a school bus and working full-time as a volunteer at Westport Mennonite Brethren Church. I was barely able to pay the bills.

That Christmas the church decided to give a gift of love to the pastors. Since I was a volunteer pastor I didn’t expect to receive anything, in fact the church had not planned on any gift until some within the congregation reminded them of their desire to give to my family. It was during the presentation of gifts to the pastors that the church honored me, even mentioning they had forgotten about giving me a gift that season. They took up an offering, and there were several individuals who came up after the service to give gifts. The monetary gifts those people gave where what enabled me to give my family Christmas that year. I’ll never forget how God and his people came through. This year the season and reminders are much the same. As this newsletter goes out, presently, there is no way I will be able to share gifts of love with either my family.

This year and this season has brought back memories. Truth is the last months have been tough. I have gone through a series of health issues that seems to be on the mend and finally being addressed. I just completed surgery that has hopefully resolved some of the issues. I know I can expect one more surgery and a recovery that will take some time. That on top of a recent move into a much smaller house and the lack of giving at The Virtual Pew has caused me to be a little depressed lately and at times questioning the call God has on my life. There has been sacrifice many don’t realize.

I have no doubt God has been using the ministry of The Virtual Pew, I see it in the correspondence, I hear it in the conversations either face to face or via telephone. I have no doubt God is using the ministry of The Virtual Pew. The truth of it is though, without the support of others who can give, or the speaking engagements this ministry is going to have a very difficult time continuing in the way it is. As a result, this Christmas, without a gift from God, and the gifts of others it will be difficult. Presently, The Virtual Pew has less than $600 in its account after outstanding bills are paid. I am dedicated to the ministry of The Virtual Pew; I know its value, I know of the changed lives and appropriate leadership and direction it is giving to various people across the planet. From Australia, to the sands of Baghdad, and from the streets of Wichita Kansas, to the shores of Hawaii, I have had the joy of experiencing and knowing this ministries effectiveness.

This Christmas I am asking, you to consider how you can give and support the ministry of The Virtual Pew. I know many have been praying for us, I appreciate that more than you will ever know. But I also ask you to consider the words of James in considering that; “Faith without works is dead.” In other words, there comes a point in time you consider ways to support this ministry in both time and finances.

The hope is that this year The Virtual Pew is ready to move to the next level, including the possibility of bringing on additional staff, with the appropriate gifts. If the money comes in, I would love to bring on a one-half- time and a full-time position to The Virtual Pew. Remember my salary is set at $300 a week. I and those involved in The Virtual Pew would love to raise that salary but as of the last few months that salary has only been $200 a week in order to spread the finances into areas that need attention and to keep those areas of ministry going. I ask you to consider this small salary, understand I have requested and kept the salary at a minimum two thirds of what the regular salary is in order to keep things going.

I also ask churches, businesses and others to consider bringing me in to speak, even if just for a few moments to describe the work of The Virtual Pew. You simply have to visit the web site to see the topics available. Many have said wonderful things regarding this work and the effectiveness of what God has done. I will tell you, as I watch the media and press; the message of hope is as relevant as ever.

It is discouraging, even depressing at times, but I continue to be reminded of the need for people to hear a real, and honest message relating to Jesus Christ. I find pleasure in spending time with people and finding ways to encourage them. It is one of the things that makes this ministry unique, I see people I am working with as people of value, I see the need to give them real time. I don’t want handouts, I want to earn the way for The Virtual Pew, but I need doors to get into, I need someone who will follow through with the ability to book me. We need more than prayer, we need prayer backed up with action.

As you approach the Christmas and Holiday Season I ask you to look at ways you can financially support this ministry. Truth is, we have had Christians, non Christians, even Atheists and Agnostics give because of the value they see in it and the knowledge they have regarding the work I do. I promise the desire, effort, and effectiveness won’t cease.

This year, for the first Christmas of The Virtual Pew we are asking people to consider the gifts they can give. For each gift, either in honor of, on behalf of, or for another, even yourself, we will send a personalized card of your choice designating the gift given. If you want the gift to be anonymous we will insure it is. We will also send appropriate cards for the person giving the gift to the person receiving the gift. Because Jewish contributors have given we will also send Hanukah Cards, or for others, Holiday Cards. You simply designate the holiday you want to observe. Of course, we celebrate, unapologetically, Christmas, that isn’t to say we don’t appreciate and observe others and their day of choice.

The personalized cards we send out will have a paragraph that designates what the gift is for, and who it is from, it will also include a paragraph describing The Virtual Pew. This is a unique way to give a gift that makes a difference. I’ll never forget my daughter doing something like this last year when she brought us two goats that assisted a poor family in a third world country. We will likely never see the family those goats went to, but I have thought often throughout the year of how those goats must have helped the family. Your gift will make a difference in the life of someone.

Counseling: I provide daily counseling on various subjects. As you can imagine this takes time and involves a variety of individuals in various needs. In the past the counseling I have provided involves everything from dealing with pornography, the hurt that has come about from Christians, struggling with past sexual sin, drug abuse, sexual abuse, parental relationships, mental illness, and much more.

$25 provides an hour of counseling service

$30 provides 300 minutes of telephone service. Currently The Virtual Pew uses 600 -900 minutes of phone service a month which involves counseling via telephone.

Specialized Counseling: This is an area that involves more than just talking or corresponding with someone via the telephone, and/or, email. Over the last year this has included Drug Counseling, Sexual Abuse Counseling, Mental Illness, Job Training Counseling, marriage counseling, and various others.

$25 purchases a drug test kit for someone involved in drug counseling and rehab.

$25 provides an hour counseling services for anyone in any area.

$50 provides materials for a prospective family in marriage counseling.

$30 provides an hour of job search assistance for someone unemployed.

$1,000 assists in the cost of counseling, job search, job placement, and job training for an unemployed person. I have unique experience and will work with the homeless, mentally ill, or unemployed person to identify appropriate persons who will have a chance at success, but also assist in finding job placement, and up to one week with the person on the job, training them at no cost to the employer. On these jobs, we search for entry level positions, not fast food or high turnover jobs. Think of the tremendous savings to tax payers, and the help it provides someone unemployed. We aren’t only providing a valuable service here, but a tremendous savings to tax payers.

$1,500 provides an extensive drug treatment program, and detoxification effort to someone coming out of drug addictions. This may require a 30 day assistance program and even involve the person living with us for the duration of time in order to assist them. We cannot guarantee success, we can guarantee effective methods and help that has proven to be effective.

Unique Ministry

$40 gets you an article blogged on The Virtual Pew, and MySpace on any topic you choose. These articles are read by the hundreds of thousands on a weekly basis. Have an area you would like to know my opinion, or see addressed, I’ll spend 2 hours doing the research, and then writing it and posting it complete with hyperlinks and photos.

$40 gets you a movie review and a look at the spiritual themes on virtually any movie you want. Of course for obscure movies or movies not readily available, you may have to provide the movie. If a current movie in theaters, or available on DVD the $40 will include the costs.

$50 takes a homeless person to dinner, not at McDonalds but a nice 3+ star restaurant, something they may not be used to. A note here, blessings such as this are often needed. If a person don’t begin to feel they deserve this type of recognition, they may never feel they are ready to help themselves.

$25 takes a needy child to the movies complete with refreshments.

$100 takes a family of up to 5 to a movie, complete with refreshments and/or a meal at a local restaurant.

$25 provides basic clothing for a homeless person.

$20 purchases a Bible delivered to a person in need.

$100 provides a Christmas celebration to a homeless or needy person. There are only 4 of these available, and each of those persons will spend Christmas with our family on Christmas Eve, and Christmas day. This includes all of the costs for this, including gifts for each person. We know this type of activity opens up relationships with the individuals not just for Christmas but a lifetime.

Wrestling Ministry: For those that don’t know the wrestling community is a large part of the ministry of The Virtual Pew. From providing spiritual counseling and support to wrestling families, to providing assistance for low income families and wrestlers, we have been providing assistance for some time. In fact this ministry came to be known by many by the work I did with young cancer victim Tyler Graebner of Hutchinson Kansas. National sports celebrities all across the world became involved in our efforts with Tyler, the work and Tyler’s story was even featured on ESPN. We have also presented Church on the Mat Services at various locations including National and State Tournaments to as many as 15,000 people. The article Wrestling with God has been used and translated to various languages and has been published all around the world. The ministry doesn’t stop with these things though, there are various other ways you can support the ministry to the wrestling community.

$50 assists a youth wrestler with various club fees.

$20 covers the cost of a wrestling tournament for a low income wrestler.

$25 pays for membership to wrestling groups such as USA Wrestling.

$40 pays the fees for a Kansas Wrestler to be a part of The Kansas Wizzers, a state High School and Jr. High Team that has received national recognition.

$60 provides a wrestling uniform, shoes and a headgear for a low income wrestler.

$150 provides a week long, intensity camp opportunity for a wrestler.

$150 provides the costs of doing one church on the mat church service.

The Virtual Pew Ministry Support

$300 provides one week worth of salary (52 available)

$20,000 provides salary for 1 year, and partial benefits for me. (only one of these available, individuals can contribute to part of this goal)

$20,000 provides a full-time co-worker for The Virtual Pew with benefits. (only one of these available, individuals can contribute to part of this goal)

$12,500 provides a part-time co-worker for The Virtual Pew. (only one of these available, individuals can contribute to part of this goal)

$30 provides 300 minutes of telephone service. Currently The Virtual Pew uses 600 -900 minutes of phone service a month

$400 pays for 1 year maintenance and updates for The Virtual Pew and Mike Furches web sites.

$25 allows for one movie review. Many became aware of The Virtual Pew through the association with Hollywood Jesus. Being able teach others how to use culture to share your faith, is exhibited no place better than with movie reviews.

$15 purchases any one of the 3 movie review books I have contributed to with Hollywood Jesus. These are now selling on eBay and other locations, but we receive no benefits from those sales.

$15 purchases the CD Comin’ Around Again by Mary Jane Furches. The video of Amazing Grace has received praise and acclaim from individuals and groups around the world.

$300 provides the opportunity for me to share with a church on one of a variety of topics at no charge to that church. This is especially important for smaller churches that don’t have a budget to bring in outside speakers.

$25 pays for 1 month of internet service. (only 12 of these available)

$750 allows for one-week of intensive ministry in the streets and among the unchurched in any local community within the Continental United States. This includes transportation to and from the location, lodging while there, meals and extensive ministry in locations such as the streets of Hollywood California or New Orleans Louisiana. The contributor in this area can designate the location where they would like to see this ministry that involves one on one contact with those in the streets, including opportunities, either public and/or private where I will share. Note on this, I and others will work to promote an evangelical presentation while in this area.

$1,250 allows for one-week of extensive ministry to any location in North America including Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii or any of the Caribbean Islands surrounding North America. The contributor in this area can designate the location where they would like to see extensive ministry, involving one on one contact with those in the streets, including opportunities, either public and/or private where I can share. Note on this, I and others will work to promote an evangelical presentation while in this area.

As you can see, there are many needs of The Virtual Pew, and many ways you can support and be a part of this ministry, not just in prayer, but in the area of volunteering, and, via your contributions. I have heard you can tell where a person’s heart is by their calendar or appointment book and their checkbook. I believe that to be true. Where are you willing to invest your time, and your money? I know many ministries, and organizations are hitting you up this season for contributions. Many of those are ministries and/or organizations that I as well support. But this year, I ask you to consider where your dollar will have the largest impact. If praying about that, I am confident many will see and know of the impact this ministry has had, with the limited resources. I ask you to consider giving to and helping this ministry out this year so we can do even more. I know we need it, and I know we have made a difference in the lives of so many. Don’t take my word for it; look at some of their comments over the course of the last 6 months. Then think about the fact, that God used this ministry to begin to not only open doors, but to have an impact on changing the lives of those often called, The Lost, The Last, and The Least. May we all continue to have a passion for the very types of people Jesus loved and spent time with.

thanks again Mike..... you hit the nail on the head..... one guy that I am impressed with is Rick Warren. I know that he gets some slack, but he is a reverse tither - living on 10% and giving 90% to the church. Through his book sales he gave all that he ever made back to the church so that he did not make a salary. He drives and older pickup. He owns two suits (of which he has had forever - I have seen both of them) and he has started some great ministries working with people overseas and to the people struck with aids.

I believe that it is time for us as leaders to get back to the fundamentals of our faith. Love God, love others, take care of the poor, the needy, the widows, the children, and take care of each other.

I must say, if more Christians addressed issues with this open and honest manner, I would be more inclined to consider their faith. Bro', what can I say, you are a man after my own heart (and spirit). You are right about judging, we are not told "do not judge", we are told how to judge. Our place is not to pass sentence. On being financially well off, I don't think God begrudges us being wealthy as long as we are good stewards with what we have. All Christians being wealthy? Yeah, right, like we can all handle money! My rule of thumb is I don't want more than I would be willing to give away to someone who needs it more than I do. I think a pastor, televangelist, etc., should have an income equal to the AVERAGE of his congregation. What do you think about that? If his flock's avg. income is 60K a year, that would be an appropriate income. If his flock avg's 1 Mil./year, that would be appropriate for him. If they avg. $30K/year, $100k is inappropriate!!! Just my opinion mind you. Brother, God bless you for what you do. I will pray for you will be financially blessed to meet your needs and a little more.

Wow, Mike, you took this in a direction different than what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised, though.

For me, I also see the evident hypocrisy in Haggard's strong push against gay rights while living a double life of drug addiction and hidden sexuality. Growing up in conservative Christianity, I saw over and over again those who harped on "standards" the strongest eventually be unmasked as having a double life, often involving the very things they railed against. From a psychological standpoint, though, this isn't surprising.

I don't know that I would call myself an evangelical anymore. The intolerance, fundamentalism, and misplacement of priorities among that movement have turned me off to it. I may still qualify as a "liberal evangelical" (i.e. Tony Campolo or Jim Wallis) but I am no longer comfortable with self-applying that term. "Christian" works fine for me, although I am also considering "Quaker" or "Friend."

Wonderful blog. I think it is necessary to bring to light what is wrong within our Christian faith. I do know that God does wish for us to prosper. But to many times people associate prosperity with financial wealth. One thing I truly believe is that as Christians we are called to some form of ministry or another. Again unfortunately most people when the they hear the word "ministry" they are thinking the pulpit or going to Africa, etc. We believers are in some kind of ministry and God gives us gifts and the ability to minister to others through various areas. My wife for instance has her own ministry by maintaining a clothes closet in my home town. I truly see the word of God come through her and God's love shining his love and light through her kindness and love. God has taken her gift and love of folding and washing clothes and taught her how to use it for His glory.

And you my friend have an awesome ministry. Keep up the good work.

(and the numerous sexual scandals over the years gives SO much ammunition to the anti-believer, who is a different category). Great Blog Mike, one thing though that you do not mention is the need to be praying for those in leadership. Too often in the western church, when leaders fall it turns into a feeding frenzy. I am not saying that is what you are engaged in, but I do see it happening and it grieves me. Throughout the last week I find myself lead to pray for Ted Haggard and his family. There is necessary pain and there is unnecessary pain, and much of the public shame that the Haggards are going through is necessary for restoration. But much of the vitriol coming from the church is more heinous than the sins Haggard has committed. Scripture commends us to gently restore the brother who has fallen. Therein is the true measure of Christ! And that is the true glory of the Church.
